Personal PC build (mostly for gaming)

Trioxide

Hi guys.

I'm doing a completely new build from scratch, the pc will be mostly used for gaming (fps, strategy... Like, crysis 1-3, farcry series, bioshock, c&c series, sto. etc).

So here's what I've come up with:

Corsair Obsidian 750D case = 150,34€

Asus Maximus VIII Hero Alpha = 268,95€

I7-6700K = 362,44€

Corsair Hydro H110i GTX = 137,65€

G.Skill Ripjaws V 16Gb(2x8Gb) DDR4-3200 = 108,94€

Asus Strix R9 390 8Gb Dircet CU III OC = 351,97€

Seagate ST2000DM001 = 68,26€

Corsair CX850M psu = 112,18€

Asus VN279Q monitor = 246,75€

TOTAL = ~1810€

Reused parts:

Samsung 840EVO 120Gb (my old SSD)

Logitech G105 keyboard

Razer Mamba mouse

I'm from Slovenia, but the parts I am going to buy in Germany, since I work over there a lot and they're cheaper there (a lot cheaper).

What do you guys think about this build? I'm looking for a rig that'll last for a few years, and I'll also probably upgrade to dual R9 390 later on (I know the psu will probably be an issue at that time).

I'll probably go shopping for parts near the end of the month. Should I change something in this build, any suggestions (please note that I decided on AMD gpu, due to very, very bad nVidia experiences in quality/durability), 3 nV cards died on me that I had back in the day; Asus 8800gts, Evga 7600gt and Evga gtx 280 (no OC was done on them). At that time I changed to an Asus HD6870, which is still running flawlessly (after about 5 years)...

Thanks for your suggestions in advance.

CPU: Intel i7-6700K I MB: Asus Maximus VIII Hero Alpha I RAM: 2x G.SkillRipJaws V 16Gb (F4-3200C16D-16GVK) I GPU: CrossFireX 2x Asus Strix R9 390 8Gb OC DCIII I CPU cooling: Corsair H110i GTX I PSU: Corsair RM1000i I CASE: Corsair Obsidian 750D + High Airflow Intake kit I SSD: Samsung EVO 840 120Gb + SSD Samsung EVO 850 1Tb I HDD: Seagate 2Tb ST2000DM001 + Toshiba 2Tb DT01ACA200 + WesternDigital 320Gb WDC WD3200AAJS

Ya, naw man you're spending money in all the wrong places, this is 700 Euros less with the same/Similar GPU/CPU performance, unlocked CPUs in general aren't worth it, and skylake usually isn't worth it as well.

Man free-sync display availability sucks over there, the display you have there isn't worth the money at all, this one is 1080p 144hz with Free-sync, although it's a TN display

Would you want a Super Compact ITX system? Because otherwise you might just want to get a 4k display with the extra cash

Nothing wrong with choosing a 390, it seems to be the popular choice right now for price/performance. That being said, if this is primarily a gaming PC, you might be better off downgrading the CPU to the i5 and using that extra money to get a better GPU. Performance difference between 390 and 390X isn't that big, so normally I'd recommend a 980 Ti. If you're avoiding NVidia however, 390X or Fury are your options for top tier.

@Jer45 tnx for that info, I was checking the the Corsair RM1000x on that page but not the CX850M... And since theres about 40€ difference and later on I'll probably go dual gpu, it might be good to consider getting the rm1000x from the start...

@Streetguru not really interested in an ITX system, and also there's no need (yet) for a 4k monitor. The monitor I chose is actually 29,90€ cheaper, but for this 29,90€ they check for dead pixels before I pick it up. Since I don't plan to pick it up, drive home 1300km just to find out that there are dead pixels and then drive or send it back again, the 30€ extra makes sense. Also it's a 27" monitor, you suggested a 24", which I had until now and I'm going for a bigger screen with this build... (All the components are from mindfactory.de, because they're located about 70km, from where I'm working for the next 3-4weeks, and they're fairly cheap)

@adamjp the Fury is out of the question, I don't plan on putting almost half of my money from the build just into the gpu... The 390x on the other hand, I'm just not sure it's worth the 70€ extra, since performance wise in the tests I found online, there was mainly about 2-3 fps difference or am I wrong?

When I looked up the display it was 1080p, 1080p makes very little sense at 27" and is generally a waste of money to pay extra for less pixel density.

Go for a 1440p 27" display, and the display I listed was 144hz with free-sync for great gaming, I don't believe yours was above 60hz.

If you invest in a solid 4k display now you basically never have to buy another display again as you have 1080p * 4, with over double the pixels of a 1440p display, should be good for many years.

the cheapest 27" 1440p free sync monitor i found is iiyama prolite B2783QSU-B1 at mindfactory.de for 343,96€ (without pixel testing). So since I'll mostly be using hdmi as my computer connection, I'm not sure that free sync is a must have... But then again, or that almost 2x the price is worth it... I mean, if I connect my mbp to my LG 32" lcd TV with 1080p resolution. The picture isn't that bad... And it's not like be sittion 40cm from the monitor...

You can output to both displays at the same time, a 1440p is going to be more useful for productivity than 1080p and in addition free-sync is going to make games run smoothly, it's easily worth the extra cost
