The 5820k + GTX 970 / R( 390 is a fine combo, so long as you don't buy onto X99 solely for gaming. The 5820k ranks alongside the 6700k and 4790k for gaming, and comes in at around the same price point. The snag is the cost of the motherboards, as they usually aren't below $200. A build with a 6700k + R9 390 is a perfectly balanced build, and the same can be said about a 5820k + GTX 970.

Well I kind of put it the wrong way, the 5930K is a waste, so he should get a 5820K and a better GPU and have better performance for the same cost. With the money he saves with the 5820K, he could get a GTX 980 or R9 Fury/R9 Nano.

I'm upgrading my system to a 6 core i7-5930k with a gtx 970 I want a nice black and red theme could some of you make a PC on part picker with the i7 and gtx 970 I'll have a look at what you guys came up with I just options to look at before buy

Do not buy the 5930k. Either buy the 5820k or the 5960x. The only different between the 5820k and 5930k is the number of PCI lanes you get. (28 to 40.) However, this will not affect the performance of cards in SLi or Crossfire, as a PCI-E 3.0 running at 8x / 8x / 8x is still more than enough bandwidth for modern GPU.s The 5930k is simply a waste of money.

What will this be used for? Rendering and editing? Or just gaming solely?

The 5820K would be the most ideal choice over the 5930K due to its lower cost with no apparent disadvantage.

Any chance you could upgrade that PSU though?

What the f*ck? Why would you spend more money on the 5930K instead saving money for a same performance 5820K and a way better GPU? The 970 isn't the best card to pair with an X99 platform, that's like buying a prebuilt PC....

If the pcie lanes from the 5930k are worth it to you, then buy the 5930k.

Some people may want to take full advantage of SLi, m.2, pcie SSDs, etc.

That is literally why intel offers this CPU variant, for people who want the extra pcie lanes not offered by the 5820k.  It is a business strategy by them, thus it will cost you $$$.

*looks at my specs & sobs* I feel like I'm doing my 5820K a disservice for having a "weak" GPU. But alas, it plays BF4 well for me, which is all I play :P

@Ricky507

I would recommend the i7-5820K over the i7-5930K since it's much cheaper with the same performance. The only thing the 5930K has going for it, is 40 PCI-E lanes which really only matters in 3-Way or 4-Way GPU configurations.

Sure, what's the total amount of money you're willing to spend on the CPU, Motherboard, RAM and GPU? I think we forgot to mention that you need new DDR4 RAM as well for X99.

You could do a 5820k which is essentially the same thing except with fewer PCIe lanes, and use the money you save to jump uo to a higher end GPU

It's a nice pair, I was just saying that OP could make a better PC by saving money on the CPU. I play a lot of BF4 as well :D

Yeah this is a nice build thanks I'll use some off the thing you recommended like the ram/mother board is it risky using a liquid cooler ?

Everything is risky. Just follow the instruction guides and follow the steps carefully if you don't know what you are doing. Do that and everything will be fine :)  atleast if its not dead on arrival

I used a AIO cpu-watercooler for my first build, and i had no problems installing it. But if you don't trust watercoolers you can always go with an air cooler, they also do their job well. I also suggested a build with an air cooled cpu and a GTX 970 if you haven't seen it yet. You could also just use the air cooler i suggested there. Main reason i went with a AIO watercooler in my build was because i think it looks nice :D
