Usb overcurrent issue

My MSI motherboard says "usb overload shutting down after 15 seconds to protect mainboard" (even after fron pannel usbs are disconnected). I was wondering if this could be an issue with the way I wired the pc (if so where might the issue be)? Finally could it be that my power supply (250W) is not powerful enough?

there might be a short in one of your peripherals. also, a 250 watter is probably not sufficient, but it would depend on your system specs.

The pc is stock from IBUYPOWER it worked before but after I rewired it it won't work

Aforementioned power supply doesn't seem too powerful, although it should be alright, it could still be causing the problem.

 

Something could be wrong with your components. I built a PC for a friend, GPU was DOA and was receiving the same error context.

Ok thanks, the pc is about 1 y/o and worked up until I rewired it I then put plugs in all the usb ports and unplugged the front pannel usb but I wanted to know If I could have wired it wrong to cause this

It is a possibility that there's a wiring issue. double check for any pinched wires, and unplug everything from the USB ports and headers

Wait the gpu was dead and causing this error?! Could I unplug the gpu and test for this issue somehow because I am looking at moving from the AMD R7 250X to the Nvidia GTX 960 with a new powe supply of course

Sure man! Let me know if you get it resolved soon. If it doesn't work I could gladly hop on skype, or phone whatever works man. Probably just a silly wiring mistake you made somewhere, no biggie!

Already did that 3 times is there any wires I could have not plugged in or do the usbs run off the main motherboard plug in

if by main motherboard plug in, you mean the 24pin, then i belive so. Also, when you rewired the pc, did you run any wires directly behind the mobo?

OK thanks I will look on the Internet for how to wire the stuff I think I did it right but knowing me my thought is probably wrong if I can't get it working I might call you on skype later mine is: "epicpotatogamer"

No I put them all in the cable management area in the back of the case

seeing as the issue only occurred after you rewired, i'm fairly certain it is a wiring problem. try dicoonecting evey cable except for the 24pin, cpu 8pin, power button header, and viceo out. see if you get the same error

Ik this is unrelated but if I was to upgradeto a  Nvidia GTX 960 or 970 and an Intel i7 quad-core what kind of power supply would I need?

i'd say a 500 watt should be fine for an i7 + 970

if you dont have onboard video out, then yes to the gpu.

I do have onboard hdmi so I'll do that either way I'll know if it doesn't shut off in a few minuets but is there also the possibility of pcie slot failure?

it sounds unlikely that the pcie slot could be causing a USB error. im 95% sure its an issue with an electrical short with a wire somewhere

Ok I'll try it if it is the gpu no big deal I was getting one anyways. If it's the mobo I didn't want to replace that so it'll be $100 extra I don't need to spend

most motherboard have a 3 year warranty. i saw you said the machine is a little over 1 year old, so you should be safe (unless Ibuypower has a shitty warranty)

OK the problem is I don't have the recipe for the computer I could probably get the online version. But where do I send the mobo IBuyPower or the manufacturer? Cause IBuyPower's warranty is 6 months
