So, recently the 850 EVO 250GB dropped price by about 30-40$ so I decided to snag one while price is low and upgrade and I was wondering if anyone who has upgraded the Y50 has any tips to share prior to me going in. Thanks in advance

What tips bro. DO IT. If you have windows 10 just skip the keys when installing w10, it will automagically activate.

Well for instance, once I disconnect the battery do I have to wait a given amount of time before touching it? Are there any spots where too much pressure can cause damage (from screws) and such

If you have a early model Y50 then be careful with the inner edges of the body, they are sharp.

no. It's not 220V.

With laptops I don't twist any screws hard, basically until it doesn't turn easily and then half a turn or so. I only try to apply more pressure if it squeeks or something. For internal parts I don't tighten AT ALL.

So the drive cage and SSD should be lightly screwed in and not all the way to the max

pay attention to how tight they are when undoing it. But yeah. I don't apply pressure there, there is no way they become loose anyway.

I believe @Nineshadow did the upgrade but I could be wrong.

Nope , I bought a model with an SSD.

Anyway , it's fairly easy to open the Y50 and then you just change the HDD with the SSD.

One thing I noticed :

Once you get the screws off , if you lift from the back a little , you will notice the front (the part with the hinge) kinda doesn't want to go off. That's because the back is slightly curved. Just push it forward a little and then lift it. Otherwise you'll probably break some pins or smth.

Yeah, the panel curves around the hinge area.
