Are there any rumours ore emerging trend i the gaming industry that might end up justify an i7 6700k over the i5 6600k when used just for gaming? If not, can you think of any other reason to get it, when used for light multitasking, browsing and gaming of course?

By the time that games use the potential of i7, there will already be a better i7 than that. (This is if developers won't release one tomorrow).

Go for a 4690K if you ask me. It should be cheaper overall and still be more than enough

I feel like going with the z170 platform to futureproof my rig in terms of ddr4, more and better I/O etc. The returns here in Norway with z97 aren't that big, and I'm not planning on building before summer anyways, so by then the savings may be even smaller. Then there's the fact that I'm not really on a very tight budget.

Nope. All you gain is 4 additional threads so you better be planning on utilizing those threads to make the extra cost justifiable because you will only see minor gains in gaming for the most part and i don't see that changing any time soon because at the end of the day they're just threads, not cores.

For example if you look at the performance increase from an i3 to i5 (2 more cores gained) in very CPU intensive games you'll see that it is far greater than the performance difference you will see from upgrading from an i5 to i7 (4 threads gained). Skip to 8:17 in this video.

Edit: Another thing to add is that the i5 is still completely sufficient for the someone that's on a budget and is doing a mix of gaming/editing. The i7 really only makes sense if you primarily do CPU intensive work or if you just want the most bad ass gaming PC with no compromises and value whatever performance increase the i7 will provide no matter how small it will be in some cases.
