Getting a new Intel CPU

Trav_X
Go to solution Solved by SirCallow,

High end Skylakes are not worth it right now due to price imo, and X99 sadly does not support DDR3. Your best bet in my opinion would be a 4790K. I do not know what programs you were speaking of when you mentioned other processors being able to overclock, but I would probably not go that route, as K processors officially support it and it's just less of a risk. The 4790K is a fantastic CPU, and it is still considered one of the better ones for strict gaming. Once again, do not worry about Skylake stuff, it is not worth spending a ton of money on a new CPU, mobo, and RAM all because it is the newest, especially if you are on a budget. If the 4790K is too much I would go with a 4690K instead as it offers good performance at $100 less (but technically 4 less cores).

Hello, LTT Forums.

I'm at a very big crossroads.

I currently have an A8-5600k as my CPU. I however use a 750Ti as my GPU, because I play easy to run games at 1080p, and I bought it like a few months after the APU.

I am currently on the market for an Intel CPU, cause I don't got time for Zen.

I am just troubled. Currently, I got a 16GB of blue HyperX Fury DDR3, still with a lot of life in them cause RAM lasts long I'm presuming.

Here is part of my problem. What to get. I really only want an i5 or an i7. But which one? I was telling my friend about getting just like a 4790k so I can keep my RAM, but he said I need Skylake because it's "newer technology", so if I'm upgrading, I should get the newest generation I can. But also, I'm on a strict budget kind of. I don't know exactly the price, but like I don't think I can spend like $600+ on a 6700k, a nice new mobo, and new RAM. I would keep my DDR3 RAM, but do I want "last gen" technology? I'm stuck. Would a 6600k be the best? And besides that, people say not to get a K processor since you can still like bypass overclock brakes in other programs.

The only options I know of are like

i5-4690k
i5-4690
i7-4790k
i7-6700k
i7-5930k

There are more, but I'm kind of in a hurry right at this moment. What about 5th gen Intel stuff, like 5960x or 5920k? I don't know what to do. I need a CPU expert!

EDIT: This will be a gaming rig, mostly centered around easy to run games like CSGO, SMITE, and maybe some PAYDAY or GTA. I don't do much editing, but I occasionally use Photoshop for making payday 2 mods, as well as doing some BOINC programs from time to time.

With prices of the 6700k being as inflated as they are, i would go with something along the lines of the 5820k. its cheaper than the 5930 but its the same thing with less pci lanes which isnt a problem for like 98% of people. though im not sure the 5820k or x99 processors in general are compatible with ddr 3 ram, could be wrong on this

would def recommend this cpu if you do editing and streaming and such

If you were looking at the 4790k anyway, I would go with that over any skylake CPU. With that said, the 4th gen i5's are also great CPU's, plus like you said, not upgrading to ddr4 would be a huge advantage.

X99 is not compatible with DDR3 (I might be wrong, there might me mobos that support it but even then it isn't probably safe to do so just like it isn't safe to do so with skylake)

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

yea sorta figured because i had to get ddr4 for mine(or ecc), though to be fair 80 bucks for 16gb isn't bad. mobos is where x99 gets you
