I have a question about my father and I's project and its about the case I can use for a dual cpu lga 1366 motherboard for our little side project. We can find all the parts but we weren't sure what the size of the motherboards are.

Thank you guys/gals in advance

We will use it to run virtual machines and its just a cheap project. Just because we don't need it doesn't mean we can't do it.

watch out when you run VM's on 1366.  Not all boards play nice (I know form experience, I've used two 1366 boards for VM stuff)  Depending on PCIe switch configuration, VT-D doesn't work well despite being advertised as such (sometimes not at all due to DMA collisions with IOMMU tables). If you are planning on running QEMU KVM / XEN / Proxmox then have have to deal with PCIe flapping on boot (ICH and 5520 have issues depending on board)  Also realize that a lot of the used 1366 CPU's for cheap on ebay have been removed due to board failure and sometimes have MCH problems when booting.

Thanks for informing me and I was thinking either dual 1366 or dual 2011 v3 so are the 2011 v3's have any luck?

well dual 2011-v3 is obscenely expensive (3k - 4k +)

AMD 8350 is a viable option for virtual machines and should be considered (much better than an i7)

You can get E5-2670's for under $100 on Ebay, they would be Sandy Bridge based.

X5680s aren't amazing (especially for OS virtualization)   2.0-3ghz just doesn't cut it a lot of the time (why I'm not a fan of E5 parts despite higher core count)

Overclocked X5680s are awesome (EVGA SR-2 FTW)

yeah only problem is its damn near impossible to find one of those in functional condition (lot of the ones on ebay have burned VRMs / ICH)  Plus its a major undertaking to get working properly / overclocked
