I have some old hardware that I would like to use to build a NAS/Plex server that I might add a video capture card to later on. I'm looking at buying 4x WD Red 3TB 6Gb's for a RAID 10 array as my NAS storage.

I have $700 USD to spend on this build.

Available Hardware:

  1. AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black 3.2GHz
  2. Corsair Dominator 8GB (4 x 2GB) DDR3-1333 Memory
  3. OCZ Agility 3 60GB 2.5" SSD
  4. OCZ Agility 3 60GB 2.5" SSD
  5. OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W ATX Power Supply

Here is the build http://pcpartpicker.com/p/3hbc23 I put together w/o RAID Card.

Questions:

  1. Will the ASRock 970M PRO3 on board RAID work or should I get a RAID Card?
  2. If RAID Card, What RAID cards are available for my budget?

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

What os are you going to be running? If your running a linux/freebsd based os, just use one of the ssds to install the os on and use btrfs or zfs for raid in the os. I suggest raid 5 as there are very few advantages to raid 10. Id also just use the stock cooler. Its quiet and more than enough for the light loads that the sever will have.

Thanks for replying, I don't know Linux well but I was thinking of using Ubuntu or Fedora, they are the only ones I am a little familiar with. Ok, so go with software. I will look into RAID 5 some more. Ya, I was thinking of going stock cooler too.

If you want something simple consider like freenas or another premade distro with a web gui, but for most simple things there are lots of web guides you can use.
