I am looking at buying some RAM for a custom build and I'm a bit confused by the differences in CAS latency and also speed and struggling to find the best compromise between the two, I have seen a lot of comments and posts online which explain whats best using terms like "CAS15" but I'm not sure if this applies to the RAM I am thinking about as one is 15-15-15-36 and one is 15-17-17-35. Are these both "CAS15" latency? whats the difference and which one is better.

These are the two sticks of RAM:

Thanks.

the one with smaller numbers, so Kingston

but it doesn't really matter, just get whichever is cheaper

Budget?

The nicest stuff on the market right now is the 3200 C14 TridentZ 16GB kits, (2x8GB) or the 3600 C16 kit.

They also have lots of OC headroom.

With a proper board they are absolutely nuts:

There's basically no difference. The Kingston set should technically have lower latency, but we're talking nano seconds (literally) difference.

well a nanosecond is nothing for a human to wait for

but for a CPU to wait a nanosecond is an eternity, it's a difference between can I finish the workload this cycle or will I have to try again 5 cycles later?

it's all about the perspective

Which one's cheaper?

......Get that one.

RAM's one of those things where you can get the cheap stuff and it will work just fine.

Only in certain workloads will higher clocked or lower latency RAM will make a significant difference.

Exactly how much voltage is being pushed on those sticks? I'm betting 1.8v+, lol.

Am i the only one that can't read that image? Very tiny thumbnail. Even checked the HWbot thread, and it just linked to a blank postimage page. Either way, I will be investing in a 2x16GB Samsung kit pretty soon, so let's see how my ITX board handles it. I personally don't intend to go beyond 1.4V (1.44v under load) on my vDIMM, but it would be nice to 3400 C14 or 3200 C13, assuming my 6600T's IMC can handle it, or even my board. Don't expect this ITX board to have much left in it.
