Worth buying new CPU?

Right now I've got 2 gtx 970 but when in an 8x/8x they are sandwiched together resulting in the top card's fan hitting the bottom card's backplate. So should I buy a new mobo and keep my old i5-2500k or buy a new CPU and mobo and in that case which?

If you can find a cheap Z77 board so you can OC the 2500k, I'd say go for it. If you can't though I recommend indeed upgrading to a newer generation (4690k or 6600k)

Your CPU is fine. I would either suggest trying to get blower cards. 

Or going for a Z77 board. I know my MSI-Z77A-G45 has space between the cards in SLI.

As does the MSI-Z77A-G43.
