I have my eye on making a dual Xeon system with these:

Are these alright for modern applications?

Also, are there any socket 771 specific coolers which don't attach to the case directly, so I don't have to go the linus route of affixing a wooden block to the back?

get the 775 adapter and use it on 775 motherboard, those are mostly compatible with modern aftermarket coolers

The CPU is Server Porcessor, if you need to use it on the 775 motherboards, you must use 771 to 775 adapter, we default to send the single CPU, if you need to plus 771 to 775 adapter, it is free. Please leave a message or online to tell us. We will doing the testing before delivery.

Before you buying, please make sure that this processor can work on your motherboard,if you don't sure, please contact me freely. Thanks!

I'm looking to run a dual xeon setup, which isn't possible with a 775 board.

this article suggests that 771 socket is compatible with AM3 socket...

Thats the only place which I've seen that stated, not sure if i want to go and buy a AM3 cooler based on that

they are universal

just get Hyper 212 Evo

worst case just use some zip-ties and a Titan X for counter-weight like our mister linux likes to do
