Is it possible to fix a coil whine issue by somehow opening up the power supply (as that is where the issue is) and rewinding the coils? I'm well aware of the danger that comes with the capacitors so I would leave the psu unplugged for a long time and be cautious) is there an article or method that can be used to do this?

I had it too at one point. Certain CPU/GPU frequencies can cause it. Something about the electrical frequencies resonating...idk. I had an FX 8350 in a Gigabyte board and it was apparent under load. I swapped mobos to an Asus 990Fx board and it was much quieter( a 1/4 of what it was at load). When I switched to i7 in an MSI gaming board, it went away completely. Still using the same PSU.

RMA man... RMA....

From what I know there's no way to fix coil whine, you just have to send it back to the manufacturer.

That sounds more like it had to do with the overall power consumption.

So your PSU has coil whine? Usually it's the GPU but I guess the PSU can too just less common, and no I would not recommend that, it will not work properly afterward (most likely), especially if you plan to wind by hand, and likely wouldn't even fix the issue.

theres no may to fix it that i know of. I'd attempt to rma it, though some companies dont take coil whine for a valid reason for rma. hopefully yours does

Yeah PSUs can get coil whine bad sometimes. Mine has a very light whine under load.

PSU whines with PC shut down?!?! So, when you switch the switch in the back, does it go away?

Try turning off any flourescent lights or ceiling fans that may be on the same circuit. Also, novelty lamps like lava, tesla coil(?), strobes. I had a lamp with flowing ""plasma(?)" that wouldn't allow my stereo to play. Was weird.

I know they can (they have inductors after all) but I didn't think it was common.

It still happens when the system is on, just at a much lower pitch and volume.

To comply to ErP2013 regulation, the +5VSB circuitry had been redesign, in which cause issue many PSUs to whine even when the computer is shut down. This is true for your Seasonic Platinum 520w as well.

Read this: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1313-page5.html

"As mentioned in the review, Seasonic reports that adjustments in the BIOS of some recent motherboards eliminates electronic noise completely with many earlier production samples. The settings are:

  • BIOS set up to ENABLE ErP/EuP (S4~S5)
  • BIOS set up to DISABLE Audio Always On"
