Can't identify these ports?

Go to solution Solved by CryoRage,

Quick recap, the first one is an mSATA connector, the second one is a standard SATA connector which cannot be used unfortunately due to the fact that the bracket conflicts with the plastic cover.

I'm planning to buy a ~250gb mSATA SSD, i'll update this topic one more time only to report if it worked out or not.

Thanks for all the help!

Hi,

I got this laptop yesterday, and i was looking to see if there was a possibility of building in an SSD without replacing the hard drive.

Then i came across these ports, although i know my things when it comes to computers, i can't identify the first one. It looks like an M.2 slot, but i don't think it is. Please help?

EDIT: Forgot to mention that it's an Acer Aspire 7750-2456G50MN.

They're SATA ports.

Actually, that I'm fairly sure is an mSATA port.

What is SATA link? I already knew that the second one is SATA, but if you look at the frame there is no way a normal size 2.5 inch drive would fit there, so i'm curious why it'd be there.

The first pic is a mPCIe slot, the other is a SATA(power and data) connector.

I figured, but like i said there's no way i could fit a drive there, as i could not close the cover :/

I'm aware of what mSATA is. Because I put an mSATA SSD in my laptop.

Flip that drive around, and boom. It's in.

mSATA? Is there a way i can get an SSD in there?

Yup.

Simply purchase an mSATA SSD (you don't need to worry about differing sizes; mSATA conforms to a single size standard), place it in the laptop, and secure it with a screw on where it says "H28".

Well that makes me feel a lot more positive about this machine! Still doesn't explain why that regular SATA port has such limited space :/

It's really intended to fit a very thin hard drive. Usually drives of 7mm depth fit in those kinds of things reasonably well.

We call those, 2.5 inch drives.

Almost all SSDs are 2.5 inch which the odd exception of the nvme drive intel has.

That's the back of one.

Meaning it's just running wires down, it's not a port from the back.

What do you mean by flip it around?

All connectors found inside a PC is only one side working.

Theres no M.2 / mSATA in his computer. Could you refrain from giving him false hope?

What if he buys the drive and it can't fit into his computer?

I came as far as that, i tried to fit the drive that's already in the machine in there, but then the cover won't be able to close, so what could it be? Are there drives/cards that would fit in such a thin space? it's definitely less than 7mm.

What drives did you try with?

3.5 ones don't fit in laptops.

That isn't a slot.

That is the BACK of a slot.

Dude, those are the wires running from your other HDD.

Surprised to see no right answer yet

There here both sata the small looking one is msata used for wifi cards and ssd`s you can puick one up for cheap

example:http://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-840-EVO-Series-250GB-mSATA3-Solid-State-Drive-MZ-MTE250-/131708925593?hash=item1eaa76b699:g:UgkAAOSwa-dWo56-

if the laptop has a dvd drive you can get a optical to 2.5" and pop a ssd in there

I  have GameServer`s And VOIP servers the only price is that you have fun on them.

It does look look like its going to the hard drive but if you look next to the battery you can see the scew for the msata device that goes there here is a pic fr reference https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=msata+slot&view=detailv2&&id=9C838D375A2ED6DBB8FDDC3F45DD7D0514BEB1F1&selectedIndex=59&ccid=HuaK4F2V&simid=608025180791899443&thid=OIP.M1ee68ae05d95805638d3c3065ad44425o0&ajaxhist=0

Hm.. yeah.

Might be the photo angle.

But it looks like ribs of copper rather than a slot for you to insert something.

Definitely a slot, as i peeked in it with a flashlight. Contacted an American friend of mine and he's fairly positive it's an mSATA as well. As for the second pic, i tried putting only the bracket there (since it's 5mm in height) for testing purposes, and i cannot close the cover on it, which basically means that slot is useless.

Dude.

I'm running mSATA in my laptop.

I know an mSATA connector when I see the bloody thing.

It's keyed, there's a screw hole to keep the drive in place......that's mSATA through and through.

By "flip it around" I was talking about both Godly's image and OP's image.

Note how OP's image, the connector was keyed on the right, while Godly's image had an SSD that was keyed to the left. Turn it around in such a way that it is keyed on the right, and it fits.

You would have to screw it down, though, to secure it.
