Only one of my m.2 SSDs work, the repacement still didn't work, please help

jas57

So i got a Samsung 950 Pro m.2 ssd and it worked fine with my pc in a PCI-E slot. I then got a Samsung 120gb 850 evo m.2 ssd and it didn't work in any of my pci-e slots or the slot on the motherboard. I also got a replacement unit and it still does not work. I have tried using every pci-e slot, different adapters (a 2 lycom ones and the one by asus that came with the motherboard). I am suspecting that it may be compatible but i'm not to sure.

Any help is greatly appreciated, specs in my signature.

Have you tried your 850 evo without the 950 pro installed? My complete shot in the dark, which is probably not even close to being correct, is that there may be some conflict between the 950 pro being NVME and 850 Evo being AHCI.

I've just tried that and unfortunately it didn't work. I am now suspecting that the motherboard just doesn't support it. Thanks for your help though.

Ok to clear your situation up:

m.2 isn't always the same. It is possible for m.2 to transport a PCIe signal OR a SATA signal. (m.2 is only the connector)

You can't have a sata signal transmitted via PCIe slots, since there is no sata controller connected to it. So putting a SATA m.2 on a m.2 to PCIe Card simply can't work.

Furthermore your m.2 slot on your mainboard supports PCIe mode only (just take a look in your manual at site vii -> storage)
So you can only use m.2 SSDs with your mainboard, that are running via PCIe, not via SATA (like your 850 Evo m.2)

Next time check, that everyting is compatible.

Ok, thanks for clearing this up. I'm gonna return the 850 evo and get another 950 pro instead. Thanks for your help.
