Why are most sound cards 5.1 instead of 7.1?

Remixt

I was browsing online and noticed that most high end sound cards only offer 5.1 audio. Is there a reason behind this? I mean my mobo has 7.1 built in so why would I "downgrade" to a 5.1 source while paying $100+?

Edit: Erm I posted this in the wrong thread!! woops

Because:

1. Most of All Surround systems are 5.1. Also, because most DVDs/Blu Rays have 5.1 sound, instead 7.1.

2. 7.1 and 5.1 only tell you, how many Audio Channels there are. This has literaly Nothing to do with Audio quality.

That's also, why  Stereo Speakers for 300€ sound WORLDS better, than 7.1 Speakers for 300€.

3. Do you own an 7.1 System? If not, you dont need 7.1 audio.

If you use high quality headphones, an 500€ Stereo Dac/Amp, and an 2€ 7.1 Onboard realtek soundchip differ in Worlds in terms if Audio quality, pureness, clarity, etc.
