Supercomputer Question

I have a question too. I know you can't use them as desktops, but what if theoretically someone developed a form of linux that worked like a desktop on top of supercomputers, would it then theoretically be able to use desktop applications (even if these version had specifically written for it). I'm not saying I plan on writing a linux desktop for supercomputers, I'm asking if it's possible, and just not done for the obvious reason that it'd be pointless.

 

Edit: I say linux because it is to my understanding that there are super computers that use custom linux's for there "os"

You could develop desktop applications for super computers. There's just no way that you'd be utilizing the super computer's power to its advantage. Same with games, even if you could use super computers to game, the actual game's API/drivers will prevent it from using more than 4 GPUs. Like when Linus did his dual CPU 72 thread build, even the most extreme gaming benchmarks suffered in performance because they could not utilize the hardware well enough.

hmh, i see what you mean. My argument was 250fps>/>200fps, But I guess in a 4k or higher resolution scenario, you can top out the vram. kk thx

Well it sort of is. The more fps, lower your latency, it becomes not very noticeable at a certain point but it's still nice to have.

If i rented out a warehouse and set up a top 500 supercomputer with mostly gpu setup would it be benefitical to play games on or would it be too much power and games would not be able to handle the full power

That isn't how it works at all. In theory if you coded and made all the drivers yourself then yes you could have it work but you would have to re write a lot of things like everything to the bone from OS to game. Not worth it just to game. I would rather use it to fold, bitcoin mine, rent it, or host every game I have every played servers

I don't think the Grid servers count as a top 500 super computer.
Even if games could run, 4-way SLI even causes issues sometimes. The micro-stuttering would be ridiculous.
