My father is looking to buy a new computer because his 10 year old computer is starting to show it's age. He uses this computer primarily to browse the web, watch videos, and occasionally order things online. Microcenter offers an okay computer for almost 300 dollars, which I find to be a bit over the budget. We are currently using a AMD athlon 64 x 2 dual core processor 6000+ and 3 gigabytes of DDR2. Like I said, really old. This isn't the first time I've built my own computer, so I can hold my own ground. I thought that a little bit of criticism would be helpful in making such a purchase. Our budget is under 200 dollars. Hopefully I can reuse the power supply, case, Hard drive and dvd drive. They are sata compatible.  Currently, these are the components I'm thinking of.

1. AMD A8-7600 3.1 GHz Quad-core Processor $81.99

2. Gigabyte GA-F2A68HM-DS2H $44.99

3. G.Skill Ares Series 8GB (2x4) DDR3-2400 memory $39.98

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/gskill-memory-f32400c11d8gab

total cost: $166.86

Maximum budget: $200

Ram sure has gotten cheap ever since DDR4's release. Here is what I'm looking for in this build. I'm interested in a computer that is more fast and responsive than his current computer. Do you think this set-up has a good performance to cost ratio based on what he needs? I am interested in products that are just a little bit more expensive and a little bit more affordable if you think it is worth it.

I'm located in New York, using American currency. Thanks for your opinions.

I agree. If you're going to budget out $300 USD, try doing a build like on Scrapyard Wars :D. Best places to look for used parts are Ebay and Craigslist. Always something that's still kickass and cheap, like a GTX 660 for the price of around a GT 730.

I thank you for your opinion, but our budget is under 200 dollars. If my budget was under 300, yes I agree I would have simply went to the store and picked one up. In fact, there's a computer for $279 with similar specs as the one listed. I may be wrong, but I think the computers under 200 dollars on sale are either really old or refurbished. I don't want a refurbished unit.

Chromebook, very cheap and will work with his neeeds

I thank you for your opinion. I have not considered the option of a Chromebook. Yes, a Chromebook is affordable, cheap, and fulfills all of his requirements. I will keep that in mind. Once again, thank you.

you might as well save up then

cause theres no point in buying what you wanna buy

for now...I would just clean install his old pc..and it will be a fair bit faster..until he can afford to buy something worth buying

Yo I did an upgrade for my grandpa a while back.
All I did was slap another gig of ram (Make sure it's not a 32bit OS though), Cleaned out all the dust, and cloned the drive to an SSD.
Cheap upgrade and it worked *almost* like new. Maybe consider doing that?

Gaming PCs:
Intel i7 4790k, EVGA GTX 980ti, NZXT H440
Intel i5 7600k, Asus GTX 970 DC Mini, Silverstone SG13B
HTPC: AMD Phenom II X6 1045t, EVGA GTX 770 FTW, Fractal Node 604

Good point. A SSD is better than any hard drive.

I thought about swapping the app with an Intel 6100. They're better for single and multi threaded performance. He doesn't game, so there's no need to worry about the integrated graphics so long as it plays 1080p videos. Total cost, 216 dollars. What do you think?
