In multiple scenarios that I have tested resolution tends to not make a difference at all in FPS. Now this may just be the games I have tested but in the majority of games that people play it doesn't make a difference which are some of the more common games. I thought resolution was supposed to make a differnece in FPS in at least some games, if it doesn't why do people say 'you wouldn't be able to play this game at 1080p but you could play it at 720' when it doesn't make a difference? Why does it end up making a difference into the SDR's if it doesn't at basic 1080 and 720 resolutions?

Counter Strike: Global Offensive is one of these games, I'm not the only person that I know that has experimented with this in CS:GO either, my group that I play with (which is four people) have all tried this and have gotten pretty much near the same results. 1080p vs. 720p vs 1280x960 4:3. FPS never changed throught any of these resolution on the five different computers that we have tested. If you were like numbers for this games I can get them for you but I find it kind of pointless because it's a game that everyone can pretty much play at 60fps at least.

GTA V: This is a test that I personally did myself on both 1080p and 720p. Playing the game on high settings with no anti-aliasing I had on average 56 fps on both resolutions. \

Skyrim: This game was tested on both my laptop and desktop systems, this game was also tested on 1080p and 720p with my laptop playing the game on medium settings and my desktop playing it on ultra. Desktop on Ultra results across both resolution were on avg 75fps, laptop on Medium settings I had on avg 25fps during this game.

Assassins Creed: Syndicate this game was of course only tested on my desktop as my laptop probably would have blown up from it. Same resolutions as other games and my avg on Syndicate is 55fps on low settings. My GPU can't really handle Syndicate all that well that's why I play it on low settings. Yes I know this game is poorly optimized but I expected to see some kind of a difference in this game since my computer is just above the minimum requirements.

Fallout 4, tested at same resolutions average for this game on high settings with my system was around 54ish, it's been a while since I've actually played Fallout 4 at 1080p I just straight up launched the game in 720 just to test it as one last game that I could think of that might make a difference with my system since it is a newer title. I jut tried my best and remembered the most common number I saw when playing that game at 1080p was 54 and I saw that number a lot when playing it on 720p.

Please note I do hit 60fps in all of the games I tested at some point these are just my averages.

My desktop system specs are listed in my signature if you are wondering what I am running to get these results, I don't know if components and hardware can make a difference in results like these I just find it strange.

Laptop system specs are as follows:

AMD A10 5757M @ 2.5GHz

Radeon 8650G integrated graphics

8GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM

TL:DR Why do 1080p and 720p resolutions not make a difference in fps compared to 2k and 4k resolutions?

I understand this may be kind of pointless to make this post I'm just curious as why I saw no difference in my results, I wish I had a 2K or even 4K (although my gpu can barely handle 2k and can't handle 4k) to actually test it completely across the four most common resolutions but unfortunately I can't afford that luxury at this time. :/

Gaming Desktop - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus, 32GB Cosair Vengenace LP 3600mhz, EVGA RTX 3070 XC3 Ultra,  Sabrent Rocket 4 1TB NVME SSD, Crucial P3 4TB NVME SSD, 4TB Mass storage, EVGA 750W G2, NZXT H9 Flow

what affects performance of resolutions is the vram.

1gb is enough for 720p and 1080p

but at 2k above resolutions, sometimes the ram simply isn't enough, or cannot keep up with the textures.

so yeah. resolution doesnt really affect performance if it is between 720p and 1080p

GTA, Skyrim and FO4 are all CPU bound games.  Games don't get harder to run on the CPU the higher resolution you go.  If resolution doesn't change your FPS, it's a sure sign your CPU is holding your GPU back.

I hate it when the word "bottleneck" gets thrown around like rice at a wedding, but from what you're saying...
