GTA 5 is laggy even with a good computer

I got a new computer with a EVGA GTX 970 and a Core i5 4690k @ 3.50GHz and 8gb of RAM. But despite having a very good GPU and a decent CPU, GTA 5 seems to run very poorly. My friend has a worse GPU than me but his GTA runs smoothly at 60+ Fps, but he has a better cpu (i7). Another friend has a worse CPU and GPU but his GTA still runs better than mine. Obviously something is not right and I don't think specs has to do with my problem. All my drivers are up to date as well. So what do I do to make it run faster without having to lower graphics? If you need to know any more specs or info feel free to ask.

quick note, do you use the custom music channel? i'm not sure if its patched by now, but custom music used to -under some conditions- tank performance quite drasticly.

Make sure your power options are set to high performance. That option improves my games drastically.

You can change post processing every time you log in to the game, just change to another setting, it works for me, am I playing on the rig of my signature.

Make sure your power options are set to high performance. That option improves my games drastically.

I think it would be good to know the graphics settings you're using and maybe the temperatures you're getting during gameplay. Are you on a stock cooler?

Everything max ( but MSAA 4x) without avanced settings 1080p.

If you are exceeding your recommended VRAM ammount you will always lose a good amount of frames in that game. I would lower the settings to where you don't exceed the recommended amount of VRAM shown of the top of the graphics menu.

Everything max makes my 980ti at 1503mhz struggle. Go to GeForce expirence and hit optimize.

Yes all have full speed until 3,5GB and the other 512MB are very limited, but in most cases doesnt change that much in real gaming experience.

That's a shame, but in this case may be an issue? Not sure. I'm a little over my limit, but OK in the game.

980 Ti user here. Didn't touch the extra settings tab. Everything else maxed 1080P. I did turn of post processing, made ugly motion blur and TANKED performance. Was getting 50-80's. Without it I get solid 70+ both day and night.

To OP. Let's start removing variables on what can be the issue. Download and install MSI Afterburner. Play GTA V, for a bit, then immediately tab out and take screenshots of all the stuff you see on the graphs on MSI Afterburner. There are several stuff so scroll down, screenshot, and repeat until you get all of it. Then upload and show them to us here on the LTT forum. It'll help us get an idea of what's going on.

 

Also, screenshot or tell us your GTA V settings as well. Both the normal and advanced tabs.

Apparently after you reach 3,8GB of vram you will notice massive frame rate drops, when if you use SLI you will notice even faster after the 3,5GB limit.

If he is reaching 3,8GB yes, it can be the problem.

Search in start menu Power Options and select high performance.

You should use RivaTuner (which you can just get with Afterburner) and configure it to show the load on each core, temps for CPU & GPU, and GPU core and memory speed and usage. If anything is getting too hot or too close to 100% either there's a problem. But when you do this make sure you aren't in GTA online. Play story mode.

If your systems is running only a HDD thats at least a contributing reason, if not the reason for poor performance.

No, ssd's don't improve fps.
