socket 1151 cooler - No overclocking.

Then get the i5 6600 instead and use the stock cooler.

Realized my mistake in picking the 6600k to begin with. So used to getting K series chips.

Assuming you already bought it, something cheap like a Cryorig C7/M9i will do nicely.

Where are you shopping/located?

Why would it be overkill?

Because it is? There may be cheaper coolers that would be just as appropriate.

It isn't overkill...it's a $30 (or less) cooler.  You aren't going to save a ton going with any different cooler and it's perfectly adequate for the application.

If you just want a cooler, then $30 is overkill price. You can get good basic coolers staring from $15.

$15-20 for the cheapest cooler....or $30 for a pretty good one.  You just spent $250+ on a CPU and you can't spend $10 more dollars on a decent cooler because it's "overkill"?

It's not like he is talking about doing a custom loop to run at stock clocks.  Hyper 212 Evo is already a good and really cheap cooler.  Calling it overkill is ridiculous.

Overkill has nothing to do with price but instead performance. A 212 Evo could keep a stock 6600k just over 50c at load.

If price was the matter, a 115x stock cooler can be had for ~$5 on eBay fairly easily.

Performance is most often directly linked to increased price.  I'm just saying it's a good combination of the two.  If you want the cheapest thing possible and don't care about performance, noise, etc...then buy a stock cooler.

If price isn't an issue, then why wouldn't you put the absolute best cooler you could on?  Price doesn't matter, right?

So you are saying you wouldn't purchase a cooler simply because it would cool your CPU too well...and that is a problem to you.

Price has everything to do with it.

The cpu would perform the same with either the 212 Evo or the stock cooler. The only relevant difference would be noise and the stock cooler isn't that loud with a good fan curve and a case with decent airflow.

Yes, price almost always matters--I'm not sure where you got the idea I said otherwise.

What..? No.

I'm just saying that if price wasn't a variable, then there would be no such thing as "overkill".

$5 stock cooler vs. $100 option.  Both meet your needs and CPU performs the same.  So why not buy the $100 option...right?

No, you buy the stock cooler.  Not because the $100 option would perform too well and is "overkill", but because the stock cooler meets your needs for a lesser price.

I'm not trying to argue.  I'm saying that choosing not to use a component based solely on the fact that it performs too well...would be kind of silly.

The way "overkill" is being used here has a lot to do with price.

Again, overkill has nothing to do with price but instead with performance.

For example, a 750 Ti at $1000 isn't any more overkill than a 980 Ti. At $1000, it is a bad value but not overkill.

Overkill isn't a reason to not buy something. There's been no mention of overkill being a bad thing.

I wouldn't purchase a cooler if it was a bad value. It has nothing to do with overkill.

Bad value and overkill can't be interchanged in certain situations?

You mean bad value for your certain application? So you mean overkill? Lol.

Your example makes no sense.

An aftermarket cooler is overkill for this application, but what is keeping you from using it anyway? Price...and price alone.

You are essentially saying that you wouldn't use a component just because it was overkill regardless of price.

For example...let's say someone offered OP a high end aftermarket CPU cooler for free. According to your logic...OP should not use the cooler for this application simply because it is overkill (regardless of price/bring free).

Yes, a component can most always be overkill for the application...but if price isn't a factor, what does it matter? It's ridiculous to argue that price has nothing to do with it. Why wouldn't every component you use be overkill then? Because it's a bad value, a waste of money...? Price.

Explain again why the 212 evo is overkill here =)

Overkill means more than necessary. The necessary goal isn't to spend a certain amount of money but instead get a cooler that performs well enough.

Overkill can be interchanged with value if you want to break the essence of the word.

This isn't productive for either one of us.  I respect your opinions and we can leave it at that.

I'm fully aware of what overkill means...but you have contradicted yourself so many times here.

I appreciate your time and the discussion.

Because OP needs basic cooler like Intel stock. Evo is first price point of aftermarket ones. Hence that its too much for intended use = overkill.

The way some of your comments are worded means that you indeed don't understand term overkill. Or rather you think it means what you think it means. Its bad word overall when talking about coolers. And its funny that you keep saying 212 Evo and talking about price. Same price point has two other very good coolers, H7 and Pure Rock. From them Pure Rock would be even more overkill than Evo. Because its both more expensive (some regions) and performs better.

OP mentioned the 212 Evo, that's why it was a topic of discussion. There was argument that price has nothing to do with it, but even you bring up price point.

It's a very simple thing to understand. If OP wants a stock cooler...then yes the 212 would be overkill in that scenario. I don't disagree...I was just disagreeing with explanations, arguments, and justifications that were being thrown around.

The thing that you guys seemed to have trouble grasping is...if you aren't saying overkill as a negative thing and price has nothing to do with not buying something because it is "overkill"...then what does it matter if it is overkill?

You simple aren't buying it because there are cheaper options that will serve the purpose. Yet you say it has nothing to do with price?

Factors of the term "overkill" are going to vary from situation to situation. In this situation...yes, price is a main factor in labeling an aftermarket cooler as overkill.

Price has nothing to do with overkill but has everything to do with value and making a decision on a purchase.

Edited: Let this get to me a little and was kind of an ass. I'm a better man than that, so I'm walking away from this. Kind of funny when you stop long enough to realize are arguing with kids on the internet.

I'm not discussing the definition of overkill. We are talking about what OP stated...that 212 evo was overkill. I agree that it is overkill for the situation. It was worded in a way that implied that being overkill was a reason or justification for not buying it. Being an overkill in performance alone would be a ridiculous reason to not use a component...

It is likely that OP is definitely including price point in his justification of the cooler being "overkill" and not wanting to purchase it.

The cooler is still overkill for the application, but what would it matter if price wasn't a factor???

Read the OP again...that is what we were discussing.

Have a good one.
