so my new r9 390 runs witcher okay , probably gonna need to set some more stuff down to get steady 60fps ..

my problem is that the card gets very hot! it reached 84 degrees and i thought it super high so i got out of the game as fast as i could.

whats the max temperature i can get with the r9 390? i mean what are the safe temps with it? and will getting a new case solve the problem? i wanna get the CM master case pro 5 .

i got an i7 4790 , the 390 , 16gb ram .

its a prebuilt xps 8700 case and mobo

lack of cooling in your system. I also have that card and had the same temps as you until I got my noctuas. now I'm at 75 at load

84 is a bit hot but it is nothing the 390 can't handle. I'm not sure if it is different but the 290(x) would shutdown after they reached 93 degrees, so you won't damage your card. Getting a new case will definitely solve your problem as your current case looks to have terrible airflow.

They didn't shutdown. They throttle at 95c. 390 series is 1 degree lower. They throttle at 94

its reaching 84c because of your case... I mean look at it. barely any room for heat to go out. Upgrade your case with good airflow.

Yep. Not much you can do about it with the MSI cooler. It's not designed to run cool without a ton of airflow. With your case closed and an hour of gameplay. I wouldn't be surprised if it reached almost 90c at stock.  And it will be super loud.

That's a decent temperature, but your case is really cramped. Does it have any form of airflow?

No this is not a decent temp!!! Anything above 75 should make him nervous!!!

But as i see the case and no airflow this is a normal temp, you should expect higher in time.

there is no reason to worry about 75 degrees. remember, we are talking about amd cards. this is what they are made to do

You have no idea what you're talking about. You can run an R9 290X above 90 degrees all the time and it's technicaly fine. Anything below 90 is fine, 84 degrees is not a bad temp, although it's a little high (unless OP's 390 is from gigabyte, they're shit)

i7 on a stock cooler and one exhaust fan with an R9 390

If you play for longer...much longer it would probably hit throttling temps which is round 82-94 deg cel.

Time for a case upgrade...any suggestions from our veterans?

i got some suggestions , i got the c70 and the master case , probably gonna go with the mastercase as its newer and about the same price.

thanks everyone.. im gonna upgrade that system one at a time and make a picture time lapse ;)

84 degrees is fine and completely safe, you just want to keep it below 90, but even then it's not a temperature that would damage anything or cause throttling since that temperature is 95 degrees on the 200 series and 94 degrees on the 300 series.

That doesn't mean that I wouldn't recommend a case upgrade, get a case with good airflow and the temps should drop quite a bit. Lower temps=better basically.

EDIT: LOL I just saw the picture of your case inside, jesus christ change your case ASAP, take care of good cable management when you'll be transferring your build, and I also suggest you get an aftermarket CPU cooler like the Hyper 212 EVO, which is cheap and decent

I share your pain my friend.  I have the MSi R9 390 myself and even though my case have sufficient airflow the amount of heat that the GPU fan put out is more powerful than the system fans.  That heat end up circulating around the case and sometimes recycled back in.In your situation I think you would benefit greatly by just taking the side panel off or find away to put some holes on the side of the case where GPU is exhausting the air, because when your graphic card dump air out it basically hit against the side panel and runs around back into your GPU.

There are holes where the gpu is man.. Forgot to send a picture with the case sidepanel on.. But there are holes

How big are the holes and are they located right at the bottom area where the graphic card is exhausting the hot air? Have you tried running it with the side panel off?

They are small but the quantity is about 50 i think, and i didnt try that, i will though.

  • 2 weeks later...

Let us know how it turns out.  When I took the panel off on mine the temperature difference is huge.

i took it off and theres like a 10 degree difference , the overall temps got down actually i dont know why though :P i didnt do anything different but yeah its better off getting a new case
