Can't enable SLI

I had it in the 3rd slot since it's a 3 slot card just so the fans had extra room but after quick search through the BIOS I noticed the third large PCI-E lane only runs at 1x and can go up to 4x but doing this disables PCI-E slot 1 and 2.

 

I just moved the card to the second PCI-E slot and it worked, temps are still fine on the almost smothered card even with MSI Kombustor running.

Title says it all. I'm using 2x 680 DCU2 2GB. I've re-installed the drivers three times now, I've tried different SLI bridges, I know both cards work. Where the configure SLI option should be it only says 'Configure Surround, PhysX'

 

However when installing the drivers "PhysX software" always fails, I'm not sure why or if this could be the problem. 

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Ah, yes. Also, x4 slots and below do not allow for SLI.
