Core i5-4690k + GTX 980 or Core i7-4790k + GTX 970? Will be doing occasional gaming and mostly for productivity. Thanks in advance! :)

For gaming: Intel Core i5 4690K + AMD R9 Fury.

For editing and other stuff: Intel Core i7 4790K + R9 390.

I don't know if you know this, but GTX 980 is faster than Fury non-x. Especially after overclocking.

390 is a good card. Can't go wrong with it. Just don't buy Asus AMD cards.

The R9 Fury performs better in games than the GTX 980 so far as I've seen it.

Fury is better at 4K I'll give you that, but at 1440p and 1080p 980 will win after overclocking.

stock benchmarks don't mean shit in this case. Because GTX 980 overclocks like an absolute monster and Fury comes throttling out of the box.

Like you said it depends on the games. In some games it's a close call. Like in this video it varies per game.

4790k + R9 390.

 

If you're doing GPU based rendering or acceleration on some of your programs that needs CUDA cores, then get the GTX 970.

That's your opinion. I don't watch many Tek Syndicate video's but when I do watch them they're mainly trustworthy. At the end it depends on what the OP wants anyway.

OS, AI, Data mining techniques etc. CS stuffs.
