what kind of games are you playing, what GPU do you have?

It's not the CPU's problem.

Your HDD is getting old.

i  thought it might be the cpu as i am playing fifa which is cpu intensive.

are you getting horrible frame rates in FIFA?

can you look up some benchmarks what kind of performance do others get with similar hardware to yours and what others get with newer hardware.

if after that you conclude that your cpu is at fault, then sure go ahead and upgrade to X99 or some 4790

CPU: Intel i7 5820K @ 4.20 GHz | MotherboardMSI X99S SLI PLUS | RAM: Corsair LPX 16GB DDR4 @ 2666MHz | GPU: Sapphire R9 Fury (x2 CrossFire)

i planning to get skylake if i were to change. What are signs that my cpu is dying or bottlenecking? i had this cpu for around 5 years.

Check what he said to check. Benchmarks are a great troubleshooting resource.

Malwarebytes may not have caught everything...

How many processes and services start up with the computer?

How many auto-updaters are running?

Have you tried scans with other software?

My money is on an overworked OS.

The i5 2400 should still have life left in it for a while yet if everything else is kosher.

Edit: Also, the advice to clean the inside of the PC is really good. You should do that at least every 3 months.

cpus are immortal

signs of that your cpu iss bottlenecking - there's only one - your CPU utilization is pegged at 100% and overclocking actually benefits you in performance in a meaningful way, not just benchmarks
