Just a quick question whether you are restricted to use the EK XRES combo unit (https://shop.ekwb.com/ek-xres-dcp-2-2) which is specifically designed for the pump (https://shop.ekwb.com/ek-dcp-2-2-12v-dc-pump) or whether you can attach fittings to the pump itself and then use a separate reservoir such as an EK Res X3 as a whole difference section/module in the loop. Help would be appreciated as I can't seem to find anything online regarding the use of combo units. Thanks

A lot of times the combo unit has the bottom of the reservoir built into the pump top, so you would need a new pump top for the pump and a new res bottom. However, I haven't really seen the DCP pump around other companies other than EK. But if it's like traditional pumps, you will need a new top if you want to run it as a standalone unit.

Yes you can use the DCP as a stand alone pump it has the standard G1/4 threading for fittings, personally I would recommend a D5 if your wanting absolute silence.

I have quite a silent case and DCP vs D5 is like $36 AU vs $123 AU, since im on a budget I think it should be ok. So are there cooling gains from using the combo unit or is it just a matter of size and compactness?

Ok, just note the DCP isn't super silent from hearing what others have said, but as for combo unit it's mainly for compactness and look, but having them both separate can have the benefit of being able to isolate pump vibration transferring into the case or res making more noise.
