Travel Router Question

If the travel router is just as far away from the main router as the wifi device you are using is, would a travel router be pointless? Or does the travel router have some sort of special hardware for a better connection with the main router.

it's designed for having a 'secure' connection when staying at places like hotels. It's essentially just a wifi extender with some firewall rules.
