So I am attempting to install Ubuntu 15.10 on my laptop along with windows 10 however the installation freezes at random points.

Ive tried using UEFI, UEFI with CSM, and legacy boot mode. Ive disabled secure boot. I have no idea why this is happening.

Laptop is MSI GE72 2QF.

Are you sure it's frozen?  It could just be doing something time consuming that does not update the progress bar.  Click the little expander to view the console while it works if that's the case.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

If I can get that far. It will stop during configuration for settings like wifi or partition selection.

oh  , that's interesting.  Hm... does the machine work normally under a different OS?  If not, I would suspect hardware issues.  If it does, Ubuntu is not liking your system :P

Windows 10 has been running fine and it still is. This has been frustrating to say the least. I've been at this for nearly 5 hours.

Your disc/usb drive may be corrupted

I used the installer to check if it was and it said it was fine. I am going to try a different USB drive in a bit so I will let you guys know how that goes.

Can someone remind me if there is a command line drop box in the stock ubuntu installer? IIRC there is one in the ubuntu gnome installer. Well anyways if there is I would reccomend watching that during the install and seeing if its actually locking up and if it is seeing what the command line says.

There is, but his installer is freezing before that point.

Oh right. Now I remember how the ubuntu installer works. Its been a while lol.

Well then it sounds like the ISO or thumb drive is corrupt.

If it's freezing during the partition loading, he might need to do the partitioning before trying to install. I ran into this issue on my desktop once when I had the maximum amount of non-extended partitions.

So I am trying Ubuntu 14.04.3 and I've gotten much further than I ever have. I don't know if 15.10 is broken or if its the different USB drive. I will comment again in like 20 minutes if it succeeds.

Well after who knows how many attempted installs I finally got ubuntu on my system. I went to Ubuntu 14.04.3 insteal of 15.10 and it seems to working.

Your problem seems to be common on your laptop, take a look here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2284315&page=2

1. You HAVE to install ubuntu 15.04 64bit. Any other version simply does not work.

2. In the BIOS you have to disable the following: FastBoot, Intel Speedstep, SecureBoot
3. In the BIOS make sure that UEFI is enabled with CSM
4. When starting the Ubuntu installation you have to add the kernel option "libata.force=noncq". This is a MUST!
5. After the installation do a full update on Ubuntu. Then you can remove the kernel option "libata.force=noncq". Your SSD should perform faster now. But SpeedStep is still a problem. I have to keep it off.
6. I even re-enabled Fastboot and Secure in the BIOS and it still runs fine.

Well I wish I knew that before I started this endeavor xD. Oh well I problem solved through it so I can count it as a win.

Hopefully your post can help others who own the same laptop. (I would imagine that this issue is persistent across this generation of MSI laptops since they would all most likely be using the same BIOS.)

Some updated steps however as not all of those bios changes are necessary.

1. I got 14.04.3 installed.

2. I have only disabled fast boot and Secure Boot. Intel speedstep is still going.

3. I did that

4. Never needed to do that.

5. I updated regardless.

6. I will probably give that a try to see if it breaks it.

most of those are probably things the user turned off just to see if it would work with everything off, then didn't check if it would work with some on. it's most likely an issue with the kernel not being particularly up to date on ubuntu, maybe something like fedora would have less inconveniences
