GTX 970 and R9 390 are equivalent cards, they trade blows from game to game.

The R9 390X is slightly faster (around 8%) but this performance increase is not worth the increased price tag.

No GTA V though?

same thing...increasing pixel count by roughly 30% will not make one card perform utterly better versus the other card.

what CPU and powersupply you plan to use with this setup?

AMD cards handle higher resolution better - so the higher up you go the less appealing the 970 becomes

If you want the AMD route. Get the 390. Nvidia. Get the 970. 390x isnt worth it

Tomb Raider that is due in a month? The one with Tress FX 2.0? Nvidia? Sod off....

EDIT: The same Tomb Raider Xbox One runs at 30fps with TRESS FX? AMD TRESS FX? FUCKING NO....

it's 13% - look again http://gpu.userbench...390X/2577vs3497

390 is 6% faster than a 970 according to that.

yes that one, it's an nvidia game and it has nvidia gameworks features built in and it will be the first game to include VXGI technology (voxel global illumination) that came with maxwell cards for VXAO ambient occlusion, the game will also be bundled with nvidia GPU's...it's an nvidia sponsored title now and will pack gameworks technologies:

still the GTX 970 beat the r9 390 in many games due to better drivers and better general support from game developpers wheter you like it or not it's also more efficient and support better features and technologies...it's a more refined, more advanced GPU that offer comparable performance at the same price or lower.

R9 390 is slightly more powerful and has more memory...in the long run it will depend on AMD's budget to support the cards overtime and continued optimisation through drivers updates...and AMD funds are...well...you know.

They sold batman AK too. Guess how that turned out.

Okay, what are all of these exclusive "features and technologies"? I see you throw that around a lot but never bother to explain. I can do it for you, the only "features" Nvidia has over AMD are shadowplay and gamestream - nothing else - nada. Everything else has a direct counterpart.

As for drivers, Nvidia drivers for my 860M have given me so many headaches it's not even funny and no, it won't be faster. Look at the reality. But then again, even if reality hit you in the face with a frying pan you'd still be seeing green....

well shadowplay and gamestream...that's pretty good already don't you think?

and GAMEWORKS?! pretty nice too...CUDA...pretty good!...VXGI...that's a new technology built into maxwell graphics cards that will be used for the first time...pretty nice!

And i'm sorry about you having a bad experience with your mobile laptop GPU...maybe that's not in nvidia's focus right now i cant tell but i used both an high-end kepler and high-end maxwell cards for the past 3 years or so and never had ANY driver related issues.

i think YOU would need a good hit in the face with a frying pan son ;)

What about A-sync compute? That thing that makes the 390 perform 30% better? What about Tress FX? What about GPU Open? What about OpenCL? Don't even start with the proprietary bullshit that is Gameworks - it ruins frame-rates across GCN and Kepler. We've been over this half a dozen times. You just blindly recommend Nvidia all the time no matter what people show you as proof.

i do not, look:

OP both the R9 390 and GTX 970 are excellent choices...you get a very good and strong graphics card regardless of which card you get...both have pros and cons and at the end of the day they trade blows from games to games, so pick whichever you think is best for you personally.

how's that?!

go R9 390 and 5820K then...the R9 390X is really not worth the price premium for an 8% performance increase in games...much better to get the powerful platform with more cores/threads instead...that will last you years and allow for more GPU upgrades down the road...390 and 390X perform so close they run the same settings in games basicaly.
