I built a new computer for my parents 3 months ago and now I'm getting strange problems. First off, this system runs an MSI AM1I motherboard with an AMD Athlon 5350, 8gb ram, and a WD drive from my laptop. Recently the system has been acting up. When it is turned on, the screen is black but I can move the cursor around. Initially I reset the harddrive to fix this but sometimes it reverts back to the blackscreen after a few days of use. However, if I plug the drive into my own computer, it works fine. This past week the monitor goes to sleep, saying there is no input. I have also tested the monitor on my own system and it works fine. I've also tested for ram problems, none there. From this I think that it may be a motherboard problem but I haven't seen something like this happen before so I'm unsure. Maybe it is a drive problem and I just got lucky when I tested it in my machine? I dunno. Please send help.

Just realized this should have been in the troubleshooting thread.

the drive was reformatted?

did you boot into safe mode* and see if dear old dad installed another anti virus program because his email program told him to and he's running 2 of them ?

or maybe he caught a bug on the machine?

Even after I reset the drive and made sure nothing was downloaded, the problem still exists.
