So, I have a scenario I'd like to accomplish, but Im not sure how I can or if I can do what I want. Say I have a home server with 3 HDDs, at 3TB each. Is there a way I can set them up to be accessed remotely but with authentication to certain storage. Say I have three people, I want them to be able to access one of the HDDs, and only that one, in order to put files or take files from it, but be unable to access/view the other files on other HDDs, Ideally allowing me to access the storage almost like a network drive. If I cant have seperate volumes, how would I allow people to access just these HDDs without access to the server.

Better yet, can I do that, but partition the HDDs or something and break up the 3, 3TB HDDs into 9 volumes of 1TB to give 6 people a dedicated and private folder.

Does this require special software or OS to do? Can I do it, if yes, how would I? If this isn't possible, what are my alternatives to achieve a similar goal?

I tried googling but its a little too specific of a question to google and yielded no good results.

mods: wasn't sure if should post this here, general discussion, or storage solutions, please move if you feel appropiate

You could probably set up partitions for the array for everyones "space" and set advanced sharing options to the appropriate restrictions. This is for windows btw.

how would I set that up? is there a specific name for this process that I can google and read/watch about?

Its in the spoiler. So all you have to do once you created the partitions is right click on the partition and go to sharing.

thank you, thats exactly what I want as far as accessing the partitions, thanks for taking the time to make that. How would I make the accessible remotely though, any knowledge on that?

I would imagine a vpn on the host and each of the clients would allow you to access it where ever you have an internet connection.

Not a 100% sure on that though. That is something that I have to figure out soon my self since I have to set up a couple servers for a new business that I am co-founding.

hmm, ok, I'm not too familiar in VPN area so I'd have to look into that a lot more to understand. If you ever figure it out yourself before I do, let me know :)  , and good luck with your new business.

i'm gonna suggest you use linux, you can set up samba shares in a quite easy syntax (once you get the hang of it) with a specific user login for each.

you could probably even have a governing account that can access all 3.

should note that for some reason combining windows 8.1 and linux's samba requires you to log in twice before it works.

any useful guides on that? I know linux would be a good option, but I've never used it as a daily driver and Im not familiar with how linux works, while in windows Im very familiar with everything. If something goes wrong in linux and I need to fix it I would be clueless.
