Random fps/performance drop

Go to solution Solved by dennisw95,

Update? How is it going?

So I uninstalled Geforce experience and downloaded the drivers off of Nvidia's website and did a clean install of the drivers. Once I did that, i restarted comp, checked out CS: GO & WoW.... Fps back to normal :D Question though, does disabling DSR improve FPS or reduce FPS?

So in the past day or two i have noticed that a few of the games i play have dropped in average fps. For example i used to get around 300 fps in cs go max settings, and about 90-140 fps in world of warcraft on ultra.
But now i've had to lower my graphic settings to get a playable framerate. I know get about half the fps i used to get in cs go and in WoW i get the same frames when i lower settings to "good".

Specs:
i5 4690k OC'd
2x gtx 970s OC'd
256 gb 850 pro ssd

My temps get as high as 80c in WoW and about 70c in cs go. And my vsync in gtx control panel is off. and i have ran malwarebytes & MSE to see if it was a virus.

What could i do to figure out what the problem may be?

I think your system may be kinda hot, as I have a 970 as well but I don't get temps that high when playing games that are not graphics intensive. I don't know if running the cards in SLI will affect the temps. The cards will slow down when the temps get too high but my does not, even when it reaches 70-75c. I

f your system or gpus are dusty, clean them out with a compressed air can. The temps should decrease and performance should increase. Also make sure that your case has good airflow to cool the cards down

well at 80 you are fine if you didn't change a setting to throttle it back when it gets that hot, gpus are made to run at 80, and can go higher if needed without damage. if you think thermal throttling is the causation, try using a air compressor or canned air and clean the gpus and case, also you could unpark the cpu cores to try and get a few of the frames back,

after all that if it is still bad, and you don"t care about the files/ have a nas. then fresh install windows, systems can be bogged down overtime and a fresh install can help remove somethings that you cant see/ wont see without a greater knowledge of programs. Also you can see it as a kind of "test" if reinstalling windows and all the drivers doesnt work it means something is physically wrong with the system! Cheers hope i helpped in some way! and good luck.

Airflow for my case seems to be fine, and i believe i'll have higher temps when running sli. Also to be noted, mine are overclocked and are reference cards. I have had this computer for a little over a year now and havent cleaned my computer with compressed air yet. Idk if that is like really bad or what but it just doesnt look TOO dusty.

My main card tops out at 80 and my other card is around 72 topped out. & If you read my comment above, i havent cleaned my computer in a year since ive got it due to the fact that it doesnt LOOK that dusty. & i have a usb recover flash drive that has an image of my computer of all my system settings from day one. So i might have to do that, but im not sure how long it would take to do that whole process... 30 minutes maybe?

Did you try restarting your PC?

Yeah but it's been acting like this for the past few dates.

I did some research and it looks like the 970 does thermal throttle.

When was your last driver update? I have 2 Gtx 970 and 2 Gtx 980. When doing a driver updates I remove one card and do a clean install. My sli performance has go down the toilet if I don't remove one card.

One way to see if your drivers are installed properly is to look in 3D settings with sli enabled. If the Dsr option is missing but shows up with sli enabled, then drivers are not quite installed properly.

My last driver update was a few weeks ago, I'm updated to the most recent driver. But forgive me for asking but do you physically move the card when updating? Whats the benefit of seperatly updating each card?

& what could I do if they aren't installed properly? I haven't quite figure out of to reinstall drivers for my cards yet.

I remove them out of the systems, some will just remove power. Cannot tell you why, but I can show 30% higher frame rates. I myself stumbled upon this on other forums after my sli was stuttering and only just faster then one card, after I did a update through GeForce experience. I also don't install that. Do you have Dsr options with sli enabled. That's the only way I know if my drivers are working properly.

Sorry mistead. 2 options. Remove one card and boot. 1 use Ddu display driver uninstall and follow the directions. 2 just use the latest Nvidia driver snd choose clean install. Deselect 3D if you don't have a 3D monitor. Deselect gforce experience as I found it a resource hog and causes freeze up / lag spikes.

Reboot and then shut down. Install 2nd card and reboot. Enable sli and check the Dsr in Nvidia control panel, if it's there you are good. If not rinse and repeat.

I currently am not at my computer. But i will check the dsr option to see if it is enabled or not.

Okay when i get home i'll uninstall my drivers and reinstall them. Should i uninstall geforce experience and start to download drivers from nvidias website?

Thanks for your help so far :)

Update? How is it going?

Well I haven't been home in a few days. But I uninstalled geforce experience and made sure dsr was enabled, which is was. So it didn't really fix itself. I'm going to try to reinstall the gpu drivers when I get home tonight to see if that fixes it. If not I'm going to clean install windows because it's so bothersome when I'm trying to game and it's acting like this.

Dsr gives you the option to upscale image quality. For example you could render in 4K and the gpu will scale the image down to 1080p (if that's what your display is) and has greater detail then native 1080p rendering.

You will see display resolutions greater than your display in game.

You don't need to enable it. It is just a way to see if your drivers are working correctly. If it missing when sli is enabled, something is wrong.

For instance if I install drivers with both cards installed, Dsr is not listed when sli is enabled = lesser preformance.

Install driver with only one card, then install second card. Dsr is now available when sli enabled = better preformance.

Again, for me, no Dsr option is a flag that something is wrong with sli.

Ahhh okay I see. When I reinstalled the drivers I had both cards in and they installed fine and the dsr option was there when I had sli enabled. But I don't think I'll turn dsr on then. I'm just happy I got my frames back. :D

Thanks for all your help.
