i7-4790k Temperature Problems!

Hi guys, I have a problem reguarding my Intel i7-4790k.

Now more than ever I have really started experimenting with my computer, just really looking into computers and I love learning about them. I decided to run prime95 as a stress test for my CPU because I was interested to see what my CPU would do and how it would react. Sure enough my temperatures were insanely high, I saw something like 96 degrees on one core. I have a Corsair H100i GTX AIO cooler so surely my temps shouldn't be running this high. I bought the computer and specced it myself but had a company called PC Specialist build it for me.

What I really want an answer for is should I be worried that my temps are running this high on 100% CPU usage? I'm watching videos on youtube of similar chips and they run 70 tops on 100%, so its really making me worry something is wrong.

I'm wondering personally if my CPU needs some reapplied thermal paste because I know how important that can be. Obviously when I spent a lot of money of the computer I don't really want anything going wrong, I just hope someone knows.

On a side note, I would also like to point out that a few hours after the stress test, my computer decided to crash and give me the error message: CRITICAL_STRUCTURE_CORRUPTION (win32full.sys) and this made me worry more that something had happened after reaching such a high temperature on 2 occasions earlier that day.

I am also finding out now that it looks like my CPU is overclocked by the company that I bought it from to 4.4GHz which is the turbo boost on it. I know that temps rise as the CPU is overclocked, but I seem to think not by that much?

Thanks for reading, hope that someone can help me! Ill be checking my emails to make sure I see every reply and respond to them giving as much info as I can about my problem!

Is the cooler seated properly? Are you sure it's 90C and not 90F?

I am 100% sure its C because i'm checking the left column on CPUID HWMonitor. It seems to be a recurring fix to reseat the cooler so i will definately try that! Will I need to reapply thermal paste once I have taken off the cooler? I'm confusing myself way too much haha

Try reseating your cooler

If that doesn't work, reset your BIOS

If that doesn't work, check your MOBO for problems

If that doesn't work, cry

Gives me hope mate;)

Like I said in my other reply I am definitely looking at reseating my cooler, but would I have to reapply thermal paste once I take the cooler off? Thanks for the help aswell!

Nope. The thermal paste will not need replacing.

You sure about that home slice? If there wasn't a tempurature problem, maybe. But with one I'd replace it.

OP, also look to see if you need to apply washers to your mounting bracket. Corsair AIO's are bad about that. Had to do that myself.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

The stock thermal paste should still be fine. I wouldn't replace it until we know if it was a bad seat or something.

90f is 32c. Show me a 4790k that cun run P95 at 32c, at stock speeds, and I will give you my wallet and take that chip.

Don't use prime95 on Haswell.

Try aida64 or cinebench for useful information.

definitely check out the washer fix that app4that was talking about. The mounting hardware is too long for some boards and it does not apply enough pressure on the cpu, even with the screws fully tightened

Edit: BTW I would definitely apply new thermal paste. At the very least, use a clean flat surface (like credit card) to push as much of the old paste into a small blob in the middle of the block\cpu before reinstalling. If the paste is hardened and flaky at all then wait, and buy new TIM. It's pretty cheap

What size washers would I need? I'm about to order some MX4 thermal paste and RAM anyway so if I could get an idea of what washers to get aswell would be helpful!

I'm going out on a limb and say that you used small fft when using Prime95, anything other than blend will give monstrously high temps. Also take voltage control off auto, if you can with a non K chip.

you should be able to find a thread about the problem on LTT. I'll look but am mobile at the moment

Alright guys there has been developments. I did a quick tun on prime95 again and sure enough the temps rose to 90+ degrees again. I have then unplugged my computer, unscrewed and re positioned my cooler over my socket. I then ran a stress test using AIDA64 and now my second core (hottest of all of them) has reached a max of 70c on two different programs I am using to make sure I get good readings. I can safely say that prime95 is NOT the program to use to stress your cpu and infact AIDA64 has shown me that there was maybe a repositioning issue or that it was infact a problem with prime95 itself.

Thankyou for everyone's support for this!

just out of curiosity, what voltage are you using under a full load when you are reaching these temps? "stock" voltage on my last mobo was significantly higher than it needed to be and that might be the case with yours as well

Anyone correct me if I'm wrong but shouldn't his temperatures be a lot lower than what he's currently getting right now, even if he had an overclock, especially since he's using an H100i? I'm running my 4790k, no overclock, only using the stock cooler and I'm getting similar temperatures that he's getting.

Sounds like the chip maybe getting too much voltage, or set on auto, and is cranking the voltage up to 1.44v under load.

I would look into setting a manual voltage, starting at 1.200v and working your way down, as you test for stability. This will reduce temps.

My 4790k runs at 4.4@1.1880v temps are between 57-64C under full load.
