Like the title says how will using a dual gpu setup in 8x 8x mode affect performance over 16x 16x on a PCI-e 3.0 slot.

You may lose 1-2 fps. That is the worst possible loss

^ This, the difference is negligible.

The performance loss for running multiple graphics cards at PCI-E X8 bandwidth at PCI-Express 3.0 specifications is minimal if any -- even or something like a GTX 980 (Ti).

The bandwidth PCI-Express 3.0 @ X8 is equivalent to PCI-Express 2.x @ 16.

Most (if not all) consumer level cards can't fully saturate PCI-Express 2.x.

You won't see a difference at all, maybe 1-2FPS less but you won't even notice that. GPU's don't use that kind of bandwidth, even the Titan X can run smoothly on a PCI-E 3.0 8x.

Linus did a video showcasing if the 5820k having only 28 PCI lanes mattered for SLi. Short answer? No, it doesn't, because 8x / 8x is just fine. 8x / 8x / 8x is fine too.

Thanks that helped a lot just trying to decide if I should swap over to a 6700k vs the 5960x I already have as I no longer use my computer for rendering so the extra cores end up doing nothing most of the time

Wait. Swapping over to a 6700k, over a 5960x you already have?!

Do. NOT. Do. That. You would be a dumbass to do something like that.

The 5960x is pretty much the highest-end chip you can buy, and anything else (aside from a server-grade Xeon) would be an absolute downgrade.

Bahahhahahahaha!!!

If anyone asks you never saw me.

I understand that you're stretching the chip across multiple cores, versus a quad-core chip like the 6700k, but the performance gains in gaming would be marginal at absolute best.

Furthermore, as more games come ot support multi-core CPUs, the 5960x is going to continue to shred through them.

No I'm with you, the Skylake hype is out of control. That's like downgrading from a Corvette, to a fucking Sonic because the Sonic is "the new model" *rolls around on the floor in a fit of laughter*

I was only considering due to the fact I mostly use my pc for gaming now when originally I built it for rendering and I hear a lot of people saying the 6700k is the way to go for gaming but I see what you are saying by it being a downgrade in everything else. My 5960X is a fairly good overclocker as well which I had it OC'd to 4.8ghz at 1.36 volts.

It would be a HUGE downgrade, comically large downgrade.

Ok think I will stick with the 5960X then but I definitely need to change my motherboard cause mine wont fit the new case I want to get not sure what the value of the Xpower x99 board is though I want to get the Gaming 7 MSI board as I don't need all the features on my Xpower and I need it to fit standard ATX which the Xpower Doesn't as I want to use the Define S as my new case.
