You should change that pentium into an i3 6100 and yeah that psu can handle everything and it will be efficient at around 80% you may not get great overclocks though don't ever use asus for a gpu their ASIC quality is awful, and get a 290 or a cheaper 970.

Everything in both lists looks reasonable to me.

The 520W power supply will be fine with your planned future upgrades. It's a decent enough quality supply. You may not be able to further upgrade the system later on though.

There's nothing wrong with Z170 boards. People seem to be rating low because of random nit-picky things. As you put it yourself, no reason going to a dead socket unless your budget requires it.

Could I, perhaps, go for something like a Asus Z170-A then? It's only about 30 euro more expensive, and I could start with the dream Define R5.

There's no reason why you can't. It will do the job just fine.

16:10 aspect ratio and portait mode (great for reading and writing). I will have a 16:9 monitor next to it though, for appropriate content viewing.

That's alright I suppose. I really just wanted to know what was worth the resolution, not really the usual haha

Yeah, I'd get an i3, if only it weren't 163 EUR. I supposse you're right about ASUS quality... I am considering the GTX 970 though, it's about 100 EUR more expensive than on newegg, but I realize it's the better value GPU.

My Asus 970 has an ASIC quality of 67% most gpu's are in around 76%

Didn't people use to swear by Asus quality? Lately I've been seeing more and more comments how their quality has gone down the tanker.

yeah my 750ti also has 65% ASIC quality, from asus. Everything else is fine, just no gpu from asus... Just no.

Welp, I suppose Gigabyte or MSI GPU's is the way to go then.

I'm not too sure about gigabyte they have had some bad reviews, I love msi though.

I've decided to go with the cheaper Asus H100M-A motherboard instead. It saves me a pretty penny...

Gonna start with http://pcpartpicker.com/p/nP2PP6, with the end-goal of http://pcpartpicker.com/p/PRjT23

Gotta adjust my expectations appropriately after all...

don't unless you feel like getting a 6600 non k sku get a z170 or don't get a k sku, the h100 has no oc, stick with the z170a

Yeah, I know that, which is why I've listed the i5-6500 in that second link. I might as well just go with an Asus H170M-PLUS then. To be honest, I'm not entirely sure will overclocking pay off in my use-case scenario, as I'll be 90% in productivity and 10% in light gaming (twitch top 5 hits), and whatever triple-A catches my eye. I think I'd rather remain budget-conscious than end up spending more than double the amount I initially planned, and use the extra money for peripherals (mech keyboard, extra monitors). Might as well start by not buying into features I most likely won't make much use of in the end. A Z170 board, a K-chip, and a CPU cooler... that's already over a 200 euro price difference over the H170, non-K and stock. If I want the full ATX components as well, and the better PSU to keep temps and noise down... it quickly adds up. Heck, I'll probably just end up going for a GTX 750 Ti for 100 euro. All I need really is a good CPU and a ton of RAM...

In that case, you should go for a 6400? And I wanna sell my 750ti but you should go for an amd equivalent in price they are usually better. Edit: the 370 seems to be a good option, get a 270 if it's cheaper, and power efficiency get the 750ti, gaming with it is fine, but in terms of value the 360 or 260 might be better look at some benchmarks and you decide if you wanna go low end.

Well, it's like a 28 euro difference for 500 MHz more baseclock, so I think the i5-6500 wins out here. And welp, the 270, 370, and 950 all cost about the same. A 960 is not far off after all, but I'd rather go for more efficiency. I guess you're right it'd pay off to get a better card anyway. The price differential isn't that big between either of them, and for that little more money you get that much more. I'll see anyway, I have a good few months to decide.

But if you got a z170 board you may be able to oc the 6500/6400 just saying, but it might be hit an miss, people have only tested the i3 6100 with some select boards, but the best card should be either a 950/960 them benches are nice.

I'd OC only if I'd be able to comparatively keep the noise and temps down. I wouldn't attempt it with components not designed for OCing. But I'll see, I might as well just go with it.

well a CPU isn't just designed for overclocking the 6400 would be just as good as any on skylake, if its not good then it drops from the 6700k to the 6600k and its spreads across k sku's and lower end CPU's with lower speeds most of the time for cheaper parts and there for more buyers.
