Ok first off this is a topic I know very little about, so basicly a noob.

I am looking at making a game server for Rust. I want to use a differant machine that I already have lying around.

I would like to make the server for legacy and have it online (once I am established)

  • How easy is this?
  • What software do I need (I know that I need "steamCMD")
  • Can I run the server and the game from the same internet conection?
  • Do I need to make changes to my standard "Virgin" router?

I am sure I am forgetting to ask things but this will do. Please remember I am a complete noob as far as networking or anything internet goes. So use simple terms or please add meanings.

I hope all this makes sence.

And thanks in advance

You need to port forward on you router.(Open the rust server ports so everyone can connect)

Check with your ISP. Comcast for example will NOT allow you to run a server on a residential connection. Although your ISP wont know, they may figure it out if you have too much traffic coming in.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Is "Port forwarding" easy enough to do?

What is IPS and am I not allowed to run a server (will do it regardles)

I should add am in Scotland

ISP=Internet Service Provider, The company who sells your internet to you.

Port Forwarding can be easy or not depending on the router.

Virgin don't care about you running a server.

My concern is you don't know what your ISP is, this is going to sound elitist but honestly, I highly doubt you have the required knowledge to get a server running and open to internet traffic.

It's really not a simple process by any stretch of the imagination.

Do you know how command prompt works?

Can you write a batch script?

Do you understand steam app ids?

Do you know what ports are?

Do you know how to access your routers config page?

Do you understand how external and internal, dynamic and static ip addresses work?

Port Forwarding?

Do you run any software firewalls?

Do you know what a cvar is?

Server Config files?

Steam IDs and Admin rights?

These are all things you will need to understand in order to get a server working.

My honest advice, rent a server for a few months are use that to learn the basics, once your happy with how the server works then have a go at learning the networking so you can run your own.

Main Rig:-

Ryzen 7 3800X | Asus ROG Strix X570-F Gaming | 16GB Team Group Dark Pro 3600Mhz | Corsair MP600 1TB PCIe Gen 4 | Sapphire 5700 XT Pulse | Corsair H115i Platinum | WD Black 1TB | WD Green 4TB | EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650W | Asus TUF GT501 | Samsung C27HG70 1440p 144hz HDR FreeSync 2 | Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS |

Server:-

Intel NUC running Server 2019 + Synology DSM218+ with 2 x 4TB Toshiba NAS Ready HDDs (RAID0)
