Haswell Refresh. I'd say Skylake but those are once again using awful TIM and run absurdly hot.

second gen i7 in my laptop has burned my leg before, but its blazing fast (heh, get it, blazing? no?)

honestly, i'd rather have my school laptop be a toaster than have it sound like a vaccuum cleaner in the middle of class...

pretty much any i5 or i7 and you'll be fine as they can handle pretty much everything.

Hence why I said Haswell Refresh. Under the same conditions with Lenovo's Y-series, a 4700 and 4710 run at 95*C

A 4720 runs at 89*C

A 6700 runs at 98*C

Depends on what you want to, and the use case scenario

  • Long battery life (i.e. 8+ hours)
  • Portable (i.e. 14" and under)
  • Powerful for day-to-day tasks (i.e. MS Office, HD videos, etc)
  • Capable of light gaming

...then look for a Ultrabook, or a laptop with an Intel low power "U" processor with no dedicated graphics card (i.e. i5-5300U)

  • High resolution display (i.e. 1080p or greater)
  • Shear performance
  • Weight and size is not a concern (i.e. 15.6" or 17")
  • Don't mind plugging the system in a few time in a 24 hour span

...then get something like like a fully Quad-Core (with our without Hyper-threading) CPU (i.e. i7-5700HQ or i5-6300HQ), with a stronger dedicated GPU (i.e. GTX 960M)

AMD Ryzen 9000 Rig

  • AMD R7 9800X3D + Alphacool CORE 1 w/ Performance Mount Kit + Thermal Grizzly AM5 Contact Frame
  • Gigabyte X870E Aorus Pro Ice
  • 32GB (16GB X2) G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo RGB DDR5-6400
  • Sapphire NITRO+ 6800 XT Special Edition + EKwb Full Cover Block
  • Custom Loop w/ 2x 360mm Radiators
  • WD SN850X + WD SN750 + Samsung 980
  • EVGA P2 850W + Red/White CableMod Cables
  • Lian-Li O11 Dynamic EVO XL

AMD Ryzen 5000 Rig

  • AMD R7-5800X
  • Gigabyte B550 Aorus Pro AC
  • 32GB (16GB X 2) Crucial Ballistix RGB DDR4-3600
  • Gigabyte Vision RTX 3060 Ti OC
  • EKwb D-RGB 360mm AIO
  • Intel 660p NVMe 1TB + Crucial MX500 1TB + WD Black 1TB HDD
  • EVGA P2 850W + White CableMod cables
  • Lian-Li LanCool II Mesh - White

Intel i7-8086K / Z390 Rig (Decommissioned Q2' 2025)

Intel i7-6800K / X99 Rig (Officially Decommissioned, Dead CPU returned to Intel)

the thing is, between those two the guts of the laptop may be fundamentally different.

i've even seen the same model laptop's guts differ between different regions. (european version: 2 heatpipes, russian version: 1 heatpipe, other than that identical.)

I've done my research. All bulgarian samples, all exactly the same (torn apart to check), only difference is CPU.

thats quite interesting. are you sure its TIM, and not just the chip being a hotter chip?

4700HQ runs at 2.4-3.4

4720HQ runs at 2.6-3.6

4720HQ runs over 10*C cooler in the EXACT same config. Haswell Refresh FTW

Mobile i5s = desktop i3s

for laptop workloads and light gaming that's more than enough.

second gen i7 in my laptop has burned my leg before, but its blazing fast (heh, get it, blazing? no?)

did you clean the fan? my old laptop had a 2630QM and that idled at 35-40c and full load with turbo enabled it barely got above 80c and that's having to cool an overclocked GT540m on the same heatpipes and fan.

Not really. Witcher 3 sure like it's threads.

most people aren't gonna be running witcher 3 on a laptop, and most laptops with a GPU higher than a GTX 960m comes with a quad-core I7, and now with skylake intel has mobile quad-core i5s, which should help lower the price a bit for gaming laptops.

850M can run Witcher 3 at 30fps easily at 1080p

my 860M does it at 40-45fps

it was a toshiba P750, but honestly i probably stayed cool as i cleaned it every 2 weeks due to animal fluff, if you still have stock thermal paste it's probable that's an issue as OEMs use the cheapest stuff they can find.

I hadn't even noticed the quad core mobile i5's. That's going to confuse some people, when there are still dual core i7's around.

not really as at least intel puts a "q" in the name, unlike another CPU manufacture where you have to search to see how many cores it has.
