Hi all. I have seen a pair of Corsair cml8gx3m2a1600c9b 8gb memory at 1600 mhz xmp and timings of 9 9 9 24.

I have no idea about memory speeds when it comes to over clocking but my processor is an is 3570k and my board a asus p8z77-v.

Is this too slow for a really decent overclock. ? Eg I have a mental cooler and want to go about 4.6 - 5ghz on the 3570k.? If it is too slow what sort of memory speed should I be aiming for?

Thanks

Back when overclocking was mainly done by raising the FSB, fast memory could be useful because raising the FSB would overclock the memory as well as the CPU.

But that's not how overclocking works today. RAM and CPU clocks are completely separate.

For most games, the 1600 kit will do fine. Fallout 4 does benefit noticeably from faster RAM though.

Thanks for the quick replies guys, Would I see any benefit from running faster ram ? Other than Fallout 4? I do play Fallout 4 which is why I am asking lol.

My board apparently supports up to 2166 O.C Memory but I have a feeling that is too overkill for my machine and that the CPU would be a bottleneck at that point?

I just want to know whether I should get this RAM as its cheap or put a bit more cash at it and get some faster RAM if I am going to see an overall better benefit,

decisions decisions lol.

So after reading online I have seen that the speed difference is not really noticeable and even if it increased my fps to over 75fps it would make it irrelevant as that is my monitors max refresh rate anyway lol. Is it just a gimmick that memory is faster or is it a noticeable thing. ?

It's somewhat noticeable in Fallout 4. Only very few other games will benefit from it, mostly some driving games like F1.

Just check if you can get some 1866 or 2133 for nearly the same price as 1600. There's usually a good deal out there.
