DDR3 vs DDR3L in a laptop

Go to solution Solved by Colt_0pz,

don't use ddr3 if the board only supports ddr3l

Hello All,

Does it really matter or make difference if my laptop comes with/is supposed to use DDR3L memory but I use DDR3 ram in it? Will it work with DDR3 ram? Can I use DDR3 and DDR3L simultaneously?

I have an HP Pavilion X360 13-S121CA laptop, it comes with 4gb of DDR3L 1600mhz and I tried to use 8gb ddr3 1333mhz in the primary slot and the laptop did not boot. However, I have not tried to use the 8gb alone. Would prefer to have 12gb of ram but not against having only 8gb (4gb is not enough for my use)

Thanks in advance!

I'm not entirely sure you'll ever really notice a difference. Stick with DDR3.

that's what a few have been telling me

I really don't have a choice because the DDR3 ram didn't work with the 4gb DDR3L module, so it looks like I have to buy a DDR3L module

DDR3L is laptop RAM and DDR3 is desktop (Correct me if I am wrong)

yes and no.

DDR3L is low powered, as SBC's and phones use it as well. And ddr3 is double data rate type three synchronous dynamic random-access memory.

I thought I had some money... Oh wait... I spent it all ;(

DDR3L mostly exists in laptops and uses less power to operate (hence low voltage) and DDR3 is available in desktops, but also laptops

kudos for the explanation
