So I'm doing my first real build, I have built several pieces from scrap - I just hate seeing them thrown awa, and encountered a problem. I bought a 500w power supply and don't think it will be enough. Here is my build (up to now)

AMD FX 6300

Gigabyte 370 MB

8Gb Crucial DDR3

1Tb WD Blue HDD 5200rpm

Now here is the kicker,

Both video cards im looking at put me over 500w (I think)

R9 390

Or

A 970

I'd say either will be fine if you don't overclock that much, and I'd go for the R9 390 :)

What PSU is it btw? I would only do it if it's of decent quality

Both are fine assuming a good PSU
Neither is fine assuming a crap PSU

A member of our forum has a 980 SLI with a OC'd 4790k on 550W. Granted, its  a very good 550W, but a 550W nonetheless

If you get the R9 390 total system power draw will be about ~ 450-470 watts under load

If you get the GTX 970 total system power draw will be about ~ 330-350 watts under load

If you plan to upgrade your CPU or GPU you might want to get a higher wattage power supply but otherwise you'll be fine with a 500w psu also get your psu from a reputable brand such as corsair or cooler master

It is an EVGA 500w, I have read horror stories about crappy ones exploding so I forked over the money, I am not at all afraid of buying a bigger one to spare my parts.

Well no EVGA 500W is good so I'm afraid you got duped there. Only the GS/GQ/G2/B2 and Platinum/Titanium rated ones should be messed with and none of those are 500W, only 550W and above.

Can you return the EVGA 500B/500W (probably one of those two, I'd assume) and get something more suited for a 390/970?

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

Psu is good as long as it is an evga. Get 650w so you can upgrade in the future

Terrible advice. I like EVGA, but saying that a model is good just because of the brand is stupid. The 500W EVGA B1s are pretty bad, but something like a 620W SeaSonic unit costs around ~60$ and has excellent quality

It was no hassle, I'll put it in another non-gaming PC and buy a better one.

corsair axi, seasonic, and coolemaster vs series are great units if you can afford them, when getting a power supply look for its rating on jonnyguru.com 8.0 and up is generaly a good rating
