pc stutters occasionally

Go to solution Solved by don_svetlio,

can you write all instructions in full please I want to print it and follow everything. Can you list step by step? That would be a great help.

Download Memtest86

Create bootable USB drive with it

Run overnight

If errors are found, replace RAM

Run HD Tune Pro extended test

if lots of errors are found replace drive

Reinstall OS

install all the drivers in a proper order

If issue persists, look at a new PSU

Any explanation towards this? Cpu problem or ram problem? I did run the cpu without a heat sink a little while back. But my pc posts. Keep in mind it stutterd before my stupid mistake of not running the cpu without a heat sink. I have a 4790k and origin pc ram powered by hyperx. Nothing is abnormal in task manager when it happens.

Let me guess, you have a 390?

If he does, his signature is lying to me, and i am offended.

He has a 980.

The 390 is not universally to blame for every stuttering thread since it's not a issue that is limited to it. Shocking. I know.

RM1000

RM have some craptastic secondary capacitors. While I think it's an unlikely culprit, you could try using a different one just to rule it out.

Reinstall drivers as well, Nvidia drivers have been utter shit recently (860M here)

Check HDD/SSD statues

It was an attempt at humor. OP dropped his 4790k in the snow, that means humor is appropriate in this scenario.

excuse me? Snow? I would never bring my cpu outside.

You're not snow guy? I didn't think there would be more than one person with a 4790k that ran it without a cooler LOL.

I just wanted to run into bios. Linus did it in one video. But do u think the cpu is causing stuttering?

No, Don might be right and it's worth switching the PSU if possible and it might be RAM. Also the 4790k likes to stutter if the overclock isn't stable. If you have any overclocking done remove it and see what happens.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

There are still plenty of other options to consider before we start blaming the CPU. There is also a chance it could be software on the PC, or the OS itself. I've had trouble with a pesky little "System Interrupts" task in the task manager on some of my older machines, and it causes random stutters sometimes. I would try to follow @don_svetlio's advice and find a spare PSU to test with, to make sure its not an issue involving too much ripple in the PSU, or poor power delivery.

In the mean time, try searching for malware, run a chkdsk, or SFC /Scannow and see if there are any other issues within windows that may be causing the problem.

My personal preferences are Superflower Leadex, EVGA Supernova, Seasonic, etc. I am not a huge power supply guy, so i would probably wait for someone that specializes in that field to give you an answer.

If you can't borrow one then try EVERY other possible option before wasting money.

Resintall OS and try 355.60

Check drive health

Check connectors to make sure no loose cables are causing issues

Run Memtest86

does the cpu normally cause this or is this rare for the cpu to be the problem in his case. And if I ran the cpu without the heatsink would that have fucked it all up?

Those are solid but I should clarify

EVGA W1 are terrible

EVGA B1, G1 and NEX are crap

EVGA G2. GS, GQ, B2, P2 are great
