im building a gaming/ ws computer using asus x99 motherboard

i want to use 2 480gb ssd's in raid 0, and then use 2 1tb wd black drives in a raid 1 config, how would i go about doing this, and what raid controller should i buy

would it be possible to have the raid 1 array as a back up to the raid 0

The onboard Intel SATA ports will do what you want nicely. Also when RAID'ing SSD's it is always best to use the Intel ports as you keep TRIM support, something you loose on hardware RAID which is very punishing for consumer SSD's.

Either use Windows Backup to do the backups to the WD disks or some other software if you feel so inclined, copy scripts will also do the trick just not as nicely. Pretty sure Linus showed off some software in the backup server video you may find useful.

Hey there talbert9944 :) Welcome to the community!

The motherboard should support RAID out of the box so I would just check the manual to see how to set up the RAID0 and boot from it. The RAID1 can be easily done by creating a mirrored image from the Disk Management and then configure a continuous backup with a software or the built-in tool of the OS from your striped volume to the mirrored one.
A couple of notes:
- It is recommended to use NAS/RAID-class drives for such usages as they are much more stable and safe to use with lower chances of drive dropouts.
- Copying your files from one array to the other shouldn't really be considered a backup since it's still on the same system. This is rather redundancy. For a true backup I would recommend getting an external drive and backing up your files there, :)

Feel free to ask if you have other questions :)
