I have a Supermicro Motherboard which has a 8 pin connector. I checked the manual and it says the 8 pin power connector is required for the CPU.

However, the computer runs fine without connecting the power and only connecting the 24 pin power.

Is there a nugget I'm missing?

Does CPU need that extra power for turbo boosting or anything else?

That is a must have connector for the motherboard, if the CPU is on higher load it can potentially draw too much current through the 24 pin connector alone. Also a bit odd since most boards theses days don't post without proper 8 pin EPS power.

Yes. It works perfectly fine. Even in turbo boosting mode.

Oh, by the way my PSU can support upto 1200 watts. If that rings a bell.
