What software?

Antivirus companies usually charge you a yearly subscription fee to give you access to the updates. When you buy it in the store, you are not buying the software, you are buying the first year's subscription.

Other products have CHANGED to an annual subscription service (Adobe Creative Cloud, for instance) but you CAN still use their programs without the subscription if you bought the full retail versions. It just really makes no sense to do that any longer, since the subscription gives you all updates and upgrades at no additional cost, while the retail purchase only gives you that specific version with maybe one or two updates.

You'll have to clarify.

Subscriptions based software rely on users wanting latest updates as soon as possible. Most of those are security related. With Adobe Creative Cloud and MS Office 365 you are paying in short term less for fully featured software including all addons which are normally extra. Over years it might be bit more but then again, you always have latest version of that software. Some other software have free cloud storage with their software. Like paid version of photo manager I use.
