HDD Wont Initialize - Data error cyclic redundancy check

Is this HD gone? It is a friends and he asked me to attempt to save all his data. His laptop would not boot with this second HD installed so I removed it. Got it in my system and all I get is Data errors whenever I try to initialize the drive. Am I missing something simple?

Sorry to hijack this old thread, but did you ever figure out what was going on? I'm having the same problem right now with a new hard drive. Windows can't initialize it, ubuntu can't create partitions on it, all because of "data error: cyclic redunadncy". I'm fearing that the drive I got was dead out of the box.
