Need a lot more information. What do you use the system for (or plan to use the new system for)? What areas of performance is your current system lacking in? What results are you trying to achieve?

A complete list of your current specs and planned future specs would be helpful. http://pcpartpicker.com/

Con: less cores

pros: great overclocking

There are a lot of people who prefer intel over amd

         eats less power

plus: It's just been Christmas, is always a great argument,

btw: you can also think about switching to skylake cpu's, wll make you 'future proof'

Current build and the PSU isnt that but its a 750w one: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/LK4BMp

Next build idea just updated cpu and mobo: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2QqBMp

Honestly the cheapest and best option for a performance upgrade with those specs is an SSD. Your FX isn't holding back the 960. You'll only get a performance upgrade from FX->i7 if you use heavily core dependent software packages.

You dont need a i7, and also a 960 isn't getting bottle necked that much so there wont be a noticeable difference.

Saying "future proof" should be physically painful. There's no such thing.

Op, if you're not limited by your current set up stick with it until you are.

i think he will

far superior per core performance

that was a vid from 2014...

it is nearly 2016

It won't

i7 4790K is 10% faster than the 3770K in that video

If the difference between the 8350 OCed and 3770K OCed is non-existent in games, why would there be a difference big enough to warrant a 300$ upgrade? That's being wasteful, especially when you don't NEED it.

EDIT: A new GPU such as a R9 390X or 980 would be FAR better

Single core performance, which matters in many applications including gaming.

Not anymore. 70% of games that released this year use 8 threads.

why switch to an intel 4790k over amd 8350 hmm well power saving wont be a good reason as you just spent  more than $400 that you wont see back on the power bill. faster cores yea well ocing the 8350 would be better and with a 970 is better I would rather pick up a MSI 970A SLI Krait Edition looks like you might have fell in love with the z97 version mb to me tbh

Yes, I'm of the option that the upgrade if you can call it that is a side move. But many games still appreciate single core speed and in those games a difference could be found.

I'd wait until there's a problem.

Unless you're doing CPU-intensive things like audio or video production and absolutely need the changeover, I wouldn't recommend moving away from what you have now.

If what I'm posting has already been posted, I'm sorry.

Exactly - I wouldn't have upgraded if I had say a Phenom II X4 but when I upgraded I went from a Athlon II X2 and the difference was noticeable. Going from an 8350 to a 4790K is more of a means of stroking your e-peen rather than being productive with your money.

Agreed. Both processors are arguably the best for their socket and there's little difference in how long ether will do what is asked of them. Upgrading should be a matter of necessity.

Me too, :( but I'm learning from my mistakes.

I'm not. I'm more happy with my Y50 than I ever was with my desktop.

Laptop, yuck lol.

I had to move from my 4690k to a 4790k because I needed the hyperthreading. So that was a necessity. But I learned my lesson on trying to upgrade from a GPU that works. But if someone has money burning a hole in their pocket no one is harmed in them wasting it I guess.

I don't know if I'm dumb or not but an i7 feels a lot more responsive than i5s.

If they have money they can hire strippers and buy booze then invite me over :D

You're not dumb my friend, the i7 is much more responsive. I do a lot of multitasking, the reason I have multiple monitors, and the i7 is a big step up. But the 4690k is no joke, bad ass CPU.

I guess i7s without HT (what i5s are) are quite a bit more sluggish
