SSDs work pretty much just as any other storage drive. It should work perfectly fine as long as you have a SATA port. 
There are older SSDs that were SATAII (3Gb/s) but this isn't your only factor for the speed. If you put a SATAIII (6Gb/s) drive on a SATAII (3Gb/s) port the maximum speed would be limited by the slower component (in this case the SATAII (3Gb/s) port would limit the speed to 300MB/s). 
You can check a similar topic on the manufacturer's official forum: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Install-SSD-on-Z580-Sata-and-windows-8/td-p/1629784 it indicates that the laptop uses SATAIII (6Gb/s) so the SSD's speed shouldn't be limited :)
