Why Does Uploading Kill Your Internet?

Whenever anyone in my house simply uploads a picture my ping spikes to 800 and my download speeds get cut down by 3Mb/s. Why? I know internet is made to be more download but why not upload. Also Why is it that if I am using 1Mb of bandwidth and someone else is using 2Mbs. Why does it feel like 40 users are on all streaming movies? 10Mb/s down should be enough for gaming and youtube video watching.

Just keeping this here as a Because when you upload, depending on the file size, does use internet bandwidth. Trust me when you upload some big files to the Internet, it kills bandwidth because it needs as much of it as it can grab. Same goes to downloading stuff too. As for how many people in your house using up Internet like that, I don't know enough about networking to properly diagnose your problems.

Whenever anyone in my house simply uploads a picture my ping spikes to 800 and my download speeds get cut down by 3Mb/s. Why? I know internet is made to be more download but why not upload. Also Why is it that if I am using 1Mb of bandwidth and someone else is using 2Mbs. Why does it feel like 40 users are on all streaming movies? 10Mb/s down should be enough for gaming and youtube video watching.

Alright. I am going to learn more in depth about networking now. TechQuickie here I come!

I'm not going to write a wall of text to explain it the way it would need to be explained for you to truly understand why it happens, but basically it's this:

 

Any data that does in or out gets broken up into small packets. For every packet that you upload, the server on the other end has to respond and tell your computer that it either received the packet and there were no errors or it didn't receive the complete packet and to send it again. This works in both directions. You need upload bandwidth available to be able to download anything and you need download bandwidth available to upload anything.

 

If you are downloading, you are using that bandwidth and then a small percentage of your upload bandwidth. When you begin uploading at the same time, your uploads are now competing for the limited upload bandwidth. If your computer cannot upload the packets to the server you are downloading from to tell it that you are still receiving the data loud and clear, the remote server will slow down the speed at which it's sending you data.

 

I hope that I've made this simple enough that you can understand. I don't think I can simplify it any further.

Whenever anyone in my house simply uploads a picture my ping spikes to 800 and my download speeds get cut down by 3Mb/s. Why? I know internet is made to be more download but why not upload. Also Why is it that if I am using 1Mb of bandwidth and someone else is using 2Mbs. Why does it feel like 40 users are on all streaming movies? 10Mb/s down should be enough for gaming and youtube video watching. 

The reason is because upload bandwidth allocation is much lower than download bandwidth allocation (Asymmetrical).

 

For example, a common internet bandwidth package available here is 50Mbps down and 5Mbps up. Some of the basic plans are 15Mbps down and .5Mbps up, or even lower. It's a lot easier to saturate your upload bandwidth when the allocations are so small. Symmetrical internet connections will reduce this bottleneck, which is one of the main reason's fibre connections are becoming so popular.
