Digital Strom Bolt 3 - Inspired

ravedojek

Linus' review of the DS Bolt 3 gave me the itch to build a new machine. It has been a long time since I built a rig (see signature) and technology has changed a lot. Below is my parts list, please pick it apart and give your suggestions. First post, please be gentle.

LIAN LI PC-O6S
As you can see I really like the looks of the Bolt 3 and its showcase mount for GPU.

MSI Z97M
I picked this mobo because of its form factor (mATX), supported ram(32GB DDR3), M.2 support, and honestly aesthetics.

Intel Core i7-4790K
Speed, slight OC ability, but mostly heat.

G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 32GB DDR3
Because it was cheap, aesthetics.

EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti
Everyone seems to like this GPU and aesthetics.

Crucial MX200 M.2 250GB
A 250GB SSD that plugs straight into the board with no wires? Yes please!

CORSAIR CP-9020006-NA/RF 650W
Completely modular, fan only spins when needed.

I'll also be installing a 3TB HDD sourced from my current rig, some red sata/ps cables, red cpu heatsink/fan, an additional 120mm case fan, and maybe some red LEDs for a soft glow.

This tread has a few views, but no comments. Does anyone think this is a bad setup? Does the i7 4790k sound solid?

What is the purpose of this rig? And why is everything so small? Hard for my bad eyes to read.

I've gone for a Skylake build. The i5 6600K will perform very similarly to the 4790K for a lower price. I've put in a CPU cooler for some overclocking (which I assume you intend to do), and added in a Z170 mATX motherboard. I've reduced the RAM to 16GB, it is enough for something like video editing, 32GB is overkill. I prefer not to go with a Crucial SSD, and opted to go with a much better 250GB Samsung 850 EVO; it has a much higher quality. The GPU you chose was a reference one, so I've gone for an aftermarket version, which has a much better cooler. The PSU you had was dodgy so I went for a much reliable SeaSonic 620W one.

I'd personally opt for a cheaper case ATX case, a SLI compatible mobo and a higher watt PSU so I could look to adding a second 980Ti in the future, but it's entirely your choice so I won't dispute it.

For the part about the gpu, for a small form factor like the one he chose it is much better to have the reference style blower cooler to blow hot air out the back instead of spitting it back in the case.

And for OP, I don't know why you'd spend $360 on that case. Not to mention going with a 4790k in such a tight space would probably cook itself in time, especially if you stick with the stock cooler. if you do stick with the 4790k at least get a noctua cooler, them having good low height cpu coolers.

Thank you for the suggestions. I will do some research into them, especially the GPU.

I picked the Lian Li case because I think it's just gorgeous and displays the internals well.

The whole point of the SSD I picked was the M.2, I love the idea of installing directly to the board instead of runni ng wires.

What are the negatives of the corsair psu?

I thought the 4790k runs relatively cool? I'm thinking back to a video Linus did were he spoke about better thermals.

I don't think investing in watercooling is cost effective. Couldn't I just put that money into a better CPU and step up the the i7 extreme series? Couldn't a moderately prices heatsink do the job?
