To buy a nas or build a server.

Luc401

I am in need of a new way to backup my data so i want to use some form of network storage. I am also in need of a smaller case to because im moving around a lot. I am thinking of doing 3 different things.

Option 1: Build a new computer, but move my GPU from my current one into a smaller case, and use my current rig as a server.

Option 2:Trying to keep the cost down of option 1 by using the same GPU, and half my ram for the new computer. Using last gen processor.

Option 3: Keep my pc the way it is now and just buy a nas.

What do you guys think. Should i build another computer and use my old one as a server or just buy a nas and keep my large case?

Or option 4: Build a server that is far superior to a store bought NAS, for less than half the price. I could give you part recommendations if you want them.

I speak the honest truth with a bit of snark mixed in. I'm sorry if it doesn't line up with your beliefs.

That will get you a system that can handle NAS duties perfectly, and have a bit of performance left over for any other server tasks you have.
