Project: Aeolus 2016 - (Community Input Required)

If you have a clue about custom builds. I urge you to read on and let me know your thoughts. I apologise for the long topic, but I wanted to include as much research as possible that I have already done. I view this as a large investment and would really appreciate some advice in order to get the perfect solution.

I have been inspired by this very forum and watched quite a number of videos to build my own custom build in 2016. I need your help and patience to help me realise this build. I would love to get this full set-up running in February.

Project: Aeolus 2016

Purpose and Current Set-Up:

I have a terrible set-up and almost ashamed to say, a MacBook mid-2010. This laptop has served me well, but is certainly not coming-up to scratch with what I want to do. In essence, I currently work for a design agency working on their PR materials, events and sometimes even InDesign projects. But, I am intrigued by exploring 3D-rendering (mainly Sketch-Up). I also would like to game at a high-performance and settings as I feel like I'm held back in the current market of games.

Budget:

I have allocated roughly £1,000 (including. VAT) for the main build, in order to not compromise on anything. I would like to play at 1080p with one monitor and I am based in the UK.

Inspiration:

I saw this amazingly beautiful set-up with the white/black theme from iTwe4kz (http://bit.ly/1R12ZTE). I have adapted it slightly below, but I've tried and want to keep to a black/white theme where possible in relation to cost:

EDIT:

After all your feedback. I've come up with the following set-up:

CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K 3.3GHz 6-Core Processor  (£299.99 @ Aria PC)

CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X61 106.1 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler  (£99.98 @ Novatech)

Motherboard: MSI X99S SLI Krait ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard  (£206.22 @ CCL Computers)

Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  (£56.00 @ Amazon UK)

Video Card: MSI Radeon R9 390 8GB Video Card  (£259.99 @ Ebuyer)

Case: NZXT H440 (Glossy White/Black) ATX Mid Tower Case  (£89.99 @ Aria PC)

Power Supply: EVGA 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  (£90.11 @ Amazon UK)

Total: £1210.26

Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Would anything here concern anyone?

Stage 2:

Peripherals:

I will most likely purchase these after the main build. Mainly I'd like some advice on a good solid cost-effective screen and what I should look out for? (I have literally no clue on this element).

Any black/white themed very nice mouse/mechanical keyboard?

Customisation:

Anything I could take into consideration?

I'm still a little confused regarding the Silverstone Tek Sleeved Extension Power Supply Cable with 1 x 8-Pin to PCI-E 8-Pin Connector (PP07-PCIW) (£7.98). I'd like to use all white cabling where I can in the build. I just need the laymen's buy X of this and that.

Oh, and if anyone can point me in the direction of over-clocking guides specific to the above build.

I plan to share this build with the community. I'm committed to realising this custom build and would like to share my results with you. I appreciate your efforts if you read this far and look forward to your feedback.

Here's what i would do: The 390 has a better price/performance ratio than the 970, 32gb of RAM is a bit crazy, unless you really need it, 16gb is fine. The EVGA G2 PSU is one of the best money can buy and is fullt modular. The Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3 has the same performance as 240mm AIOs but is cheaper and quieter. As for a cheap OS, go to /r/softwareswap

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor  (£245.94 @ Aria PC)
Motherboard: MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  (£89.99 @ Novatech)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  (£56.00 @ Amazon UK)
Video Card: MSI Radeon R9 390 8GB Video Card  (£259.99 @ Ebuyer)
Power Supply: EVGA 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  (£90.11 @ Amazon UK)
Other: Silverstone Tek Sleeved Extension Power Supply Cable with 1 x 8-Pin to PCI-E 8-Pin Connector (PP07-PCIW) (£7.98)

Thanks guys! Both these amendments look great. May I ask what the decision was in order to change the motherboard, looks a lot more expensive?

The reason I went for 32GB is aesthetic to fill all the slots and it was kind of dirt-cheap. I did take a look at that CPU cooler, but it looks so damn ugly and doesn't quite hit the mark with the theme of the build I feel.

Any feedback on my questions as well?

this ^ with rather GPU to be smth like this :

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/sapphire-video-card-100382ntocl

if you can afford ofc becasue that grayish GPU could fit a little bit more into theme because its hard to find a good black and white GPU unless you got into MSI ones in sli (i mean gtx 960 ones).

the additional cores are waaayy to better than 16 giga ram.

About DDR3 and DDR4 the performance is better for rendering but in gaming it is margin unless you have smth that needs a lot of ram usage or you just want to play game with stream open or yt videos (like i do or wanna do ).

And i got dark rock 3 non pro and is good too thou.

CPU i5 6600k 4,4Ghz , COOLER Dark Rock 3 from BQ, RAM 16 GB of ddr 4 2800MHz from corsair,

 PSU EVGA 750 W GOLD G2, MOBO Msi z170A Gaming M3, CASE NZXT H440 Black/Blue,

GPU Geforce GTX 980 Gigabyte G1 Gaming,

STORAGE 1 SSD Samsung 850 Evo 250 GB and 1 HDD 500GB WD, Windows 8.1.

It's an X99 motherboard.

It's worth for the price.

Suits your theme.

Changed the cooler to NZXT Kraken X61. But H100i GTX is decent too!

Oh and i forgot about your extensions cable question. Fully modular PSU have that nice feature that you can choose how many cables you wanna use and put so first just count how many you want in da case or need (i did that and put 2 more because i am in progress of updating my rig aswell slowly but surely) and than you can either swap them instantly or later . The EVGA PSU that is here i can recomend cuz i got the same one and damn its good :D

Hmm.. Oh wow. Might be worth holding out for a few more bucks and getting this all out. I've just noticed though - should I not be looking at the Skylake architecture rather then the Haswell processors?

first skylake tend to bench more than haswell although if you wanna buy AIO cooler that shouldnt be problem.

Second about cables first count ones that you need like 1 CPU or 2 CPU 8 pins (depending on mb which you can check from pictures its usually near socket ) 1 for MB which is 24 pin cable 1 or 2 for sata (depending on case and its composition cuz SSD and HDD can be in 2 diffrent places and 1 sata cable can be not enough) 1 for peripherals i mean molex one, and last but not a least 2 cables for GPU because most new GPU tend to need 1x6  and 1x8 or 2x8 pins connector slots so you get like 7 cables in standard configuration

Skylake max has 4 cores 8 threads, This 5820k has 6 cores 12 threads which may help your needs in all the way.

for now soon there should be 10 cores 20 threads CPU but i dont rember if it was broadwell or skylake architecture :P

Wow thanks ever so much for everyone's input.

In terms of the two processors that have been suggested:

Intel Core i7-5820K 3.3GHz 6-Core Processor

Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor

Which would I get the most future-use out of and performance out of when it comes to gaming?

first one cuz the directx 12 gonna use a little bit more from CPU cores and 3D rendering benefits from ti too . What skylake or rather chipset of it offers is more storage devices and CPU offers better overclockability but wont replace another 2 cores. I would buy this setup alone if not fact the MB is expensive and for the same price i got my MB and ram .

SO if you can afford for this build i would go for it because its more future proof .

For gaming, either of the two CPUs will do a great job.  Clock for clock, they are near equal with the 6700K edging it out.  The beauty of the 5820 is those two extra cores.  When you need them for rendering (Video, music, 3d models, programming) they are there.  You can overclock the 5820, but you cannot add two more cores to the 6700K.

I've updated the start of the topic with amendments based on people's feedback and I've added the following comments:

Those are some good ones.

For the mouse, G502 (Blue light) or Razer DeathAdder Chroma (RGB) gets my vote

For the keyboard, Corsair Strafe RGB or K70 RGB is a good choice.

1440p monitor would be ideal for this setup.

Those are some good ones.

For the mouse, G502 (Blue light) or Razer DeathAdder Chroma (RGB) gets my vote

For the keyboard, Corsair Strafe RGB or K70 RGB is a good choice.

Oooh, you think I should go with a 1440p set-up?

Yes I took a look at this exact model. I'm actually a bit worried about the AIO set-ups and the problems they can cause. But aesthetically they look so much cleaner - IMHO.

Thank you.

----------------------

I've updated the start of the topic with amendments based on people's feedback and I've added the following comments:

Monitors - Best money spent would probably be two 24"-27" 1920x1080 IPS (In Plane Switching) displays.  This will give you the most work space and gives you better performance while gaming.  1920x1080 is easier for the GPU to to drive than 2560x1080, 2560x1440 or 3840x2160, you will get more FPS at 1920x1080.  This method also allows you to buy one, and add the second when it is most convenient.

Mouse and keyboard you should test out personally.  Go to a store and handle each product.

As long as the sleeved cables do not cut into the budget for core components go for it.  You can however add them later.

That's a very interesting idea and thought process.

You can run a 4K display off of either of those cards if you wanted to.  It just means you will have increasing number issues with running games as you move forward.  The R9 390(X) or GTX 970/980 will do just fine at 1440p, but will do better at 1080p.  It has to be up to you.
